McDermott says he’s staying at Creighton

Creighton coach Greg McDermott says he is staying with the Bluejays after a report he was offered the job at Ohio State.

ESPN first reported Wednesday night that McDermott met with Ohio State officials on Wednesday and was offered the job, which opened Monday when Thad Matta resigned.

McDermott tweeted Thursday, “I’m blessed and honored to be the coach at Creighton….. and am looking forward to many more great years in Omaha!”

Butler coach Chris Holtmann has emerged as the front runner to replace Matta, according to ESPN.

Pulisic lifts U. S. past Trinidad

Christian Pulisic rescued the United States with a pair of second- half goals, and the Americans beat Trinidad and Tobago 2- 0 to move into third place at the halfway point in the final round of World Cup qualifying in Commerce City, Colorado.

The U. S. is at Mexico on Sunday. Mexico maintained the top spot with an easy 3- 0 win against visiting Honduras.

Ex- Bills WR Hardy found dead

The body of former Bills player James Hardy was found in an Indiana river on Wednesday. His cause of death has not been determined. Hardy, 31, had 10 catches for 96 yards and two touchdowns in two seasons with the Bills.

The Bills selected Hardy in the second round ( 41st overall) of the 2008 draft after the receiver compiled 191 receptions for 2,740 and 36 touchdowns at Indiana.

The Patriots and wide receiver Julian Edelman reached a twoyear contract extension, according to ESPN. Edelman, 31, has led the Patriots in catches in three of the last four seasons.

Titans running back DeMarco Murray will miss the remainder of the team’s organized team activities after having surgery last week right ring finger.

The Lions signed former Bears defensive tackle Ego Ferguson.

Astros place ace Keuchel on DL

The Astros placed ace Dallas Keuchel on the 10- day disabled list because of neck discomfort. Keuchel is a big- league best 9- 0 with a 1.67 ERA for a team with the best record in the major leagues.

Chris Iannetta drove in a career- high seven runs with a homer and two doubles, and the Diamondbac­ks routed the visiting Padres 15- 3 to finish a three- game sweep.

Unseeded player in French final

Jelena Ostapenko became the first unseeded women’s finalist at the French Open in more than 30 years by beating 30th- ranked Timea Bacsinszky 7- 6 ( 4), 3- 6, 6- 3. Ostapenko will play third- seeded Simona Halep, who beat second- seeded Karolina Pliskova 6- 4, 3- 6, 6- 3.
