SUBURBAN FIREFIGHTE­R DIES AFTER COLLAPSING AT SCENE OF BLAZE

A south suburban Dolton firefighte­r died Saturday afternoon after collapsing at the scene of a fire in south suburban Harvey.

Harvey firefighte­rs responded about 1: 30 p. m. to a fire in the 1500 block of South Rockwell in Harvey, according to Harvey spokesman Sean Howard. Firefighte­rs from Dolton were then brought in to assist with the fire.

Lawrence Matthews, a 35- year- old Dolton firefighte­r, was standing on a nearby sidewalk when he collapsed, according to Howard. Matthews, who lived in Glenwood, was taken to Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, where he was pronounced dead at 3: 15 p. m.

Matthews is survived by his four children. He had been with the Dolton Fire Department since 2008. Jacob Wittich

Police: 9- year- old girl shot to death while dad showed gun to his kids

A 9- year- old girl was shot to death Saturday evening when a gun discharged while her dad was showing it to his kids in Hobart, Indiana, police said.

About 5 p. m., officers responded to a call of a person shot in the 100 block of East 10th Avenue, according to Hobart police. They found Olivia Hummel lying unresponsi­ve with a gunshot wound to the head in the bedroom of the home.

Her dad was lying on the floor next to her when officers arrived, police said. He was taken into custody.

The girl’s brothers told officers they were in the room when the shooting happened, police said. They said their dad was showing them a gun when it discharged, striking their sister in the head. Nader Issa and Jacob Wittich

12 vehicles burned in Loop parking garage

Chicago Fire Department crews battled an extra- alarm fire Saturday afternoon at a parking garage in the Loop.

Firefighte­rs responded to reports of multiple cars on fire at 12: 41 p. m. on the seventh floor of a 12- story garage in the 0- 100 block of East Adams, according to Fire Media Affairs. The fire was upgraded to a two- alarm at 1: 09 p. m.

The fires were put out by 1: 19 p. m., according to fire officials. No injuries were reported, although six cars were “burned completely” and six others were damaged in the blaze. Five people were removed from the building during an evacuation. Sun- Times Wire

Single winning Powerball ticket sold in California

A single winning Powerball ticket matching all six numbers has been sold in California and will claim an estimated $ 447.8 million jackpot.

Powerball spokesman Randy Miller says the location where the winning ticket was sold was not immediatel­y available.

The lucky numbers drawn Saturday night that will claim the 10th largest lottery prize in U. S. history are 20- 26- 32- 38- 58, and the Powerball number is 3. AP

Man charged with DUI in fatal Waukegan crash

A man has been charged with DUI for a crash that killed his passenger and injured two other people Thursday night in north suburban Waukegan.

Shortly before 9 p. m., 27- year- old Max Barraza was driving a pickup west on Washington Street near Green Bay Road at a high speed when the truck rearended another westbound vehicle, according to a statement from Waukegan police. That second vehicle then spun into the eastbound lanes and hit a third vehicle.

Barraza’s passenger, 35- year- old Adrian Biedzinski of Round Lake Beach, was trapped in the pickup after the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Luke Wilusz
