Twins choose high school SS with No. 1 pick

-

The Minnesota Twins selected California high school shortstop Royce Lewis with the No. 1 pick in the Major League Baseball draft Monday. It was the third time the Twins had led off the draft and the first since they took hometown high school catcher Joe Mauer in 2001.

Lewis hit .377 with four home runs and 25 stolen bases for J-Serra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano, establishing himself as a top prospect with excellent speed and a solid bat. He played shortstop and outfield in high school, but the Twins classified him as a shortstop when commissioner Rob Manfred announced the selection.

The Cincinnati Reds chose California high school right- hander Hunter Greene with the No. 2 pick, the San Diego Padres drafted-North Carolina high school left- hander Mackenzie Gore with the No. 3 selection, the Tampa Bay Rays took Louisville first baseman Brendan McKay with the No. 4 pick and the Atlanta Braves rounded out the top five by selecting Vanderbilt righthander Kyle Wright.

Jameson Taillon ( 3- 1) allowed five hits and struck out five in five scoreless innings in his return from treatments for testicular cancer to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates past the visiting Colorado Rockies 7- 2.

Josh Harrison hit a two- run homer in support of Taillon, who had surgery to remove the cancerous testicle May 8, then made three rehab starts before rejoining the Pirates.
