Rockies quiet Pirates, end three- game slide

Ian Desmond hit his fourth home run of the season and rookie German Marquez pitched effectivel­y into the sixth inning as the Rockies beat the host Pirates 5- 1 to snap a three- game losing streak.

Colorado picked up its major- league- best 25th road win. The Pirates managed just one extra- base hit and left eight men on as their season- high fourgame winning streak came to an end.

The benches cleared briefly in the fifth after Marquez hit Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli in the left arm with a pitch.

Braves 13, Nationals 2

Kurt Suzuki homered, Julio Teheran earned his third consecutiv­e victory and the Braves defeated the host Nationals to earn a rare series victory on the road against their NL East rival. Brandon Phillips had four hits and three RBI for the Braves.

Blue Jays 7, Rays 6

Russell Martin hit a tiebreakin­g home run in the eighth inning to lift the Blue Jays over the visiting Rays. Kendrys Morales homered among his two hits and drove in four runs for the Blue Jays, who won after giving up a three- run lead in the eighth.

Red Sox 7, Phillies 3

Mookie Betts homered twice and Xander Bogaerts had three RBI to help the Red Sox beat the host Phillies. Betts had four hits and drove in three runs to lead an offensive barrage off Phillies starter Jeremy Hellickson ( 5- 5).

Mariners 6, Twins 4

Mitch Haniger and Mike Zunino homered against Ervin Santana early, and the Mariners’ bullpen held off the host Twins late. Ben Gamel added three hits and two runs for the Mariners, who have won 12 of 17 games.

Diamondbac­ks 2, Tigers 1

Taijuan Walker pitched five sharp innings in his return from the disabled list, and the visiting Diamondbac­ks won their fourth straight. Walker allowed a run and six hits in his first appearance since May 19.

Dodgers Yasiel Puig was suspended one game and fined by Major League Baseball for making an obscene gesture to Indians fans on Tuesday night. Yankees left- hander CC Sabathia was diagnosed with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain and could be out at least four weeks. The Orioles placed slugging first baseman Chris Davis on the 10- day disabled list because of a strained right oblique. The Nationals drafted Darren Baker, the son of manager Dusty Baker, and Jake Cousins, the cousin of Redskins quarterbac­k Kirk Cousins.
