5 KILLED, 39WOUNDED IN WEEKEND GUN VIOLENCE
The gunning down of a 16- year- old boy Sunday evening was part of a deadly weekend in Chicago that saw five people killed and 39 wounded in gun violence across the city since Friday evening.
More than 200 people have been shot so far this month. And more than 1,500 have been shot this year, according to Chicago SunTimes data. Of those victims, 279 have died.
Despite the carnage, this weekend was far behind the pace of the same weekend last year. FromJune 17, 2016, to June 20, 2016, at least 56 people were shot, 13 of them fatally.
The 16- year- old boy was killed at 7: 23 p. m. Sunday in aWest Side Lawndale neighborhood drive- by shooting, according to Chicago Police. He was standing in the 1200 block of South Avers when a red four- door car drove up and someone inside fired shots.
Hewas taken toMount Sinai Hospital, where he died, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office didn’t immediately confirm the death.
A few hours earlier, road rage turned into a fatal shooting when a man was shot in the head in the South Side Chatham neighborhood. About 3: 45 p. m., the 27- yearold was traveling in a vehicle in the 600 block of East 82nd Street when someone in another vehicle took out a gun and fired shots, police said. Hewas taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a gunshotwound to the head, and he died at 4: 23 p. m., police and the examiner’s office said.
The shooter was taken into custody, and charges were pending Sunday afternoon, according to police.
Early Sunday, a 25- yearoldwomanwas shot to death in the Gold Coast neighborhood on theNearNorth Side. Raven Lemons was standing with an acquaintance at 2: 40 a. m. Sunday in the 500 block of East Ohio when someone fired shots, striking her in the head, police said. Lemons was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she died at 3: 13 a. m., police and the medical examiner’s office said.
About 6: 25 p. m. Saturday, 32- year- old Dario Balderrama was gunned down in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side, police and the medical examiner’s office said. Hewas shot multiple times in the body in the 4800 block of South Racine and pronounced dead at the scene. Balderrama lived in the same neighborhood as the shooting. Additional detailswere not provided.
One more person was killed and at least 39 were wounded in shootings across the city between 5 p. m. Friday and 10 p. m. Sunday.
