Digging for Syria survivors

-

A more contemporary reallife Middle East saga is told in “Last Men in Aleppo,” opening Friday at Facets Cinematheque. Winner of the Grand Jury Documentary prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the film tracks the White Helmets, a team of civilian volunteers who risk their lives to treat survivors of attacks in Syria’s largest city. The film also is scheduled to air July 10 as part of the “P. O. V.” series on WTTW- Channel 11.

The TV presentation is part of a “P. O. V.” series on refugees from Syria and elsewhere. It begins Monday with a collection of works including the short “From Damascus to Chicago,” about how a Syrian family has fared since settling in Chicago in 2015.
