Thames goes deep twice in Brewers’ win

Eric Thames hit a pair of home runs and Jimmy Nelson pitched seven strong innings to win for the fifth time in six decisions and lead the Brewers to a 6- 2 victory over the visiting Orioles. Stephen Vogt and Travis Shaw also homered for the Brewers.

Thames belted a solo shot off Ubaldo Jimenez in the fifth for a 4- 0 lead. The Brewers opened a 6- 1 lead in the seventh on Thames’ second homer of the game and 23rd of the season, tying him for seventh in the majors and placing him third in the NL.

◆ Cory Spangenber­g drove in the only run with a groundout, and six San Diego pitchers combined on a five- hitter as the Padres edged the host Indians 1- 0. Corey Kluber ( 7- 3) allowed one run and struck out 10 in eight innings, setting an Indians mark with five consecutiv­e double- digit strikeout games. Indians manager Terry Francona missed the game after being admitted to the Cleveland Clinic for tests.

◆ Clayton Kershaw carried a no- hitter into the seventh inning and struck out 11 to become the first 13- game winner in the majors this season, helping the first- place Dodgers beat the visiting Diamondbac­ks 4- 3 in a matchup of the National League’s top two teams. Kershaw ( 13- 2) ended up allowing two hits in seven innings.

◆ CC Sabathia was chased during a four- run third inning in his return from the disabled list, and

Kendrys Morales hit a two- run single that helped the Blue Jays beat the host Yankees 4- 1 and stop a five- game skid. Aaron Judge dented a metal casement above a door behind the left- center- field wall with his major- league- leading 28th home run.

◆ Daniel Murphy drove in five runs on four hits, Bryce Harper had three hits and two RBI and the Nationals routed the visiting Mets 11- 4. Murphy improved his career average to .405 against his former team. This was the third straight win for NL Eastleadin­g Nationals.
