S. Side man dies after gun goes off in his waistband

A 33- year- old man was killed when a handgun he had in his waistband discharged Thursday night in theWest Englewood neighborho­od on the South Side, police said.

About 11: 55 p. m., Steven Winston was sitting in a parked car in the 6100 block of SouthWinch­ester, according to Chicago Police and the Cook Countymedi­cal examiner’s office.

The gun was in his waistband, and it went off while he wasmoving the vehicle, police said.

Men face gun charges after Evanston arrest

Twomen are facing felony charges after officers caught them with guns and drugs Thursday afternoon in north suburban Evanston, according to police.

Officers were called at 4: 22 p. m. for reports of two people smoking marijuana in a vehicle in the 2100 block of Dewey Avenue, according to Evanston police. As officers approached the vehicle, 25- year- old Edward D. Carter and 27- year- old James W. Johnson got out and tried to walk away.

Upon searching the car, police recovered a loadedH& R .22- caliber revolver from between the seats, a loaded Taurus .45- caliber semi- automatic handgun with two extramagaz­ines from under the driver’s seat, and a baggie containing 3.3 grams of marijuana.

Manwanted for Sauk Village murder arrested by FBI

A South Side man wanted for a fatal shooting last week in the south suburbs was arrested by the FBI Thursday.

Jayvon L. Byrd, 24, was taken into custody in Chicago, according to FBI Special Agent Garrett Croon.

Byrd has been chargedwit­h the July 6murder of 29- yearold Jerry L. Thomas, according to Sauk Village Police Chief Robert Kowalski.

Police: Man, 25, shot to death in Brighton Park

A man was shot to death Friday night in the Brighton Park neighborho­od on the Southwest Side, police said.

The 25- year- old was standing on the sidewalk about 10: 20 p. m. in the 4600 block of SouthWasht­enaw when someone inside a silver SUV fired at him, Chicago Police said.

He was struck multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Missing Chinese scholar’s family increases reward

Relatives of a missing Chinese woman studying at the University of Illinois say they won’t leave the country without her as the reward in the case rose to $ 50,000. Family members of 26- yearold Yingying Zhang spoke Friday, pleading with the public for any informatio­n that might help find her. The FBI has said they believe Zhang is dead.

Car hit by gunfire onDanRyan

Three people were in a vehicle at 11: 41 p. m. Thursday in the southbound local lanes on the Dan Ryan Expressway near 43rd Street when someone in another vehicle started shooting, striking the victims’ vehicle multiple times, according to Illinois State Police.

No one was hit by the gunfire, but troopers blocked southbound traffic between Pershing and 43rd for about three hours to collect evidence.
