Bellinger 1st Dodgers rookie to hit for cycle

-

Cody Bellinger became the first Dodgers rookie to hit for the cycle, and Alex Wood became the first Dodgers pitcher since at least 1913 to win his first 11 decisions in a season, helping the NL West leaders beat the host Marlins 7- 1 for their eighth straight win.

Bellinger singled in the first inning, hit a tworun homer in the third, added an RBI double in the fourth and hit his second career triple on the first pitch of the seventh. Wood struck out 10 in six scoreless innings. An angry Yasiel Puig took several steps toward the mound after he was nearly hit by a pitch from Miami’s Jose Urena in the first inning. Puig hit two home runs in the Dodgers’ win Friday.

Yankees 4, Red Sox 1 ( 16)

Didi Gregorius lined a go- ahead single in the 16th inning for the visiting Yankees in the longest game between the bitter rivals at Fenway Park since 1966.

Matt Holliday hit a tying home run off closer Craig Kimbrel in the ninth, and it took 5 hours, 50 minutes and 512 pitches to finish. That is, if it’s really over. The Red Sox put the game under protest after a bizarre play on the bases involving Holliday in the 11th.

Red Sox starter Chris Sale struck out 13 in 7⅔ scoreless innings of three- hit ball.

Brewers 3, Phillies 2

Travis Shaw hit a go- ahead home run in the eighth inning for the host Brewers.

Brewers closer Corey Knebel struck out Tommy Joseph for his 45th consecutive appearance with a strikeout to start the season, a major- league record.

The victory put the Brewers ( 52- 41) a season- high 11 games over .500.

Padres 5, Giants 3

Hector Sanchez hit a game- winning two- run homer with one out in the ninth inning and the host Padres spoiled the return of Giants ace Madison Bumgarner. Bumgarner pitched seven innings, allowed three earned runs while striking out five and walking two in his first start since being injured in a dirt bike accident three months ago.
