US reaches Gold Cup final

Clint Dempsey fed Jozy Altidore for the go- ahead goal, then scored on a free kick to match Landon Donovan’s American record with his 57th internatio­nal goal to lead the United States over Costa Rica 2- 0 on Saturday night in Arlington, Texas, and into the CONCACAF Gold Cup championsh­ip game.

Dempsey, 34, entered in the 66th minute and made a perfectly timed through pass six minutes later that allowed Altidore to break in alone and beat Patrick Pemberton with a left- footed shot from 10 yards.

Host New York City FC ended the Fire’s 11- game unbeaten streak while extending its home unbeaten streak to seven in a 2- 1 victory.

David Villa and Frederic Brillant scored minutes apart early in the second half for New York City ( 11- 6- 4), which played a man down for most of the match after midfielder Yangel Herrera was ejected in the 12th minute for receiving a second yellow card. David Accam tallied his 11th goal of the season in the 54th minute for the Fire ( 11- 4- 5).

MISCELLANE­OUS Froome closes in on Tour win

Chris Froome virtually sealed a fourth Tour de France victory on the penultimat­e stage, stamping his authority on the race in a time trial in Marseille. The last rider to set off from the Stade Velodrome, Froome finished third in the 22.5- kilometer stage, won by Maciej Bodnar, and increased his overall lead.

Scott Stallings birdied the final hole for an 11- under 60 and a one- stroke lead in the PGA Tour’s Barbasol Championsh­ip in Opelika, Alabama. He had an eagle, 10 birdies and a bogey to tie the course record.
