Rockies honor Baylor with jersey in dugout
The Colorado Rockies honored Don Baylor, their first manager, by hanging his No. 25 jersey in their dugout Tuesday for their road game against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field.
Baylor, who managed the Rockies from 1993 to 1998 and the Cubs from 2000 to 2002, died Monday at 68 after a 14- year battle with multiple myeloma. The Indians observed a moment of silence in his honor before the game, and fans and players for both teams applauded after the tribute.
The Rockies lost 4- 1, though, when closer Greg Holland allowed four runs in the ninth inning. The big blow was a three- run home run by the Indians’ Yan Gomes that ended the game.
Red Sox 2, Rays 0
Chris Sale ( 14- 4) allowed two hits and struck out 13 in eight innings to lead the Boston Red Sox past the host Tampa Bay Rays for their seventh consecutive victory. Sale reached double figures in strikeouts for the 15th time this season, the first time that has been done since Randy Johnson in 2002.
Twins 11, Brewers 4
Brian Dozier hit his first career grand slam, and Max Kepler and Eddie Rosario each homered twice to power the Minnesota Twins to a rout of the visiting Milwaukee Brewers. Losing pitcher Matt Garza ( 5- 6) was roughed up for eight runs and eight hits in 3„ innings.
This and that
The Seattle Mariners said right- hander Felix Hernandez ( 5- 4, 4.28 ERA) will be out three to four weeks with bursitis in his pitching shoulder. Hernandez missed nearly two months earlier this season with inflammation in the same shoulder.
Umpire Joe West was suspended for three games without pay for comments he made about Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre. In a USA Today story June 20, West was asked about the biggest complainer in the majors and said it was Beltre.
The Rangers sold right- hander Ernesto Frieri ( 0- 1, 5.14 ERA) to the Mariners for $ 1.
