Cutler: First practice ‘ felt right’
Former Bears quarterback Jay Cutler practiced for the first time since December on Tuesday, going through 11- on- 11 drills and one- onone conversations as he learns the names of his new Miami Dolphins teammates.
When practice ended, Cutler said he had no second thoughts about deciding to renew his working relationship with coach Adam Gase and come out of a brief retirement. Gase was the Bears’ offensive coordinator in 2015.
‘‘ It felt right,’’ Cutler said. ‘‘ Going into work and getting here and going through the motions of the practice, it felt good. I told Adam, ‘ Thanks for bringing me in.’ It’s fun to be back out here.’’
Cutler agreed to delay his fledgling career as an NFL analyst for Fox when he signed a one- year, $ 10 million contract with the Dolphins. He’s expected to start in place of Ryan Tannehill, who is out with a knee injury that is likely to sideline him for the entire season.
Gase said Cutler looked like the same player he was when the two were together with the Bears.
‘‘ He remembers basically everything with the offense,’’ Gase said. ‘‘ He felt just right back in it.’’
Newton’s shoulder still ailing
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will sit out the team’s preseason opener Wednesday against the Houston Texans as he continues to battle soreness in his right ( throwing) shoulder.
Other than some light warmup tosses, Newton hasn’t thrown at camp since July 30. He had surgery in March to repair a partially torn rotator cuff and was cleared to participate in camp after missing all organized team activities and minicamp, but he developed soreness in the shoulder after five practices.
The Panthers hope Newton will be ready to start the season Sept. 10 against the San Francisco 49ers.
Packers cut ties with DL Guion
The Green Bay Packers released defensive lineman Letroy Guion, ending a three- plus year tenure marked by off- the- field problems.
Guion was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in June. In an unrelated incident, the NFL suspended him without pay for the first four games of the upcoming season for violating its policy on performance- enhancing drugs.
It was the second disciplinary action against Guion in three seasons. The NFL suspended him for the first three games of the 2015 season for violating its substanceabuse policy.
49ers LB suffers concussion
San Francisco 49ers rookie linebacker Donavin Newsom suffered a concussion during practice and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance, but the team said tests showed his spine is OK.
