Marrella MD, John Joseph “Jack”

85, a resident of Northbrook for over 50 years died Saturday, August 26, 2017 after a short debilitati­ng illness. He leaves his beloved wife of 61 years, Barbara ( Huntley) Marrella; his loving children, Janet ( Frank) Aiello and John Marrella Jr.; his cherished grandchild­ren, Kathryn Aiello, Kristin ( Kent) Lenceski, Jacquelyn Marrella, and Michael Marrella; his precious great- granddaugh­ter, Lily Lenceski and great- grandson, Walter Lenceski born Sunday, August 27, 2017 and many cousins, nieces, nephews and their families. He was predecease­d by his parents, Natale and Angeline Marrella and brother, Robert Marrella. He leaves a sister, Carol Lindstrom and sister- in- law, Antoinette Marrella.

Jack was a 1950 graduate of De Paul Academy in Chicago, winning many medals in track and field. While attending the University of Illinois he was drafted into the Army and served at Fort Carson, Colorado. After graduating from Northweste­rn Medical School in 1964, he completed an internship and a 4 year residency program at Passavant and the Veterans Hospitals. He joined the practice of family medicine in Des Plaines at Ellinwood Medical and was on the staff at Lutheran General Hospital for 43 years, retiring in 2002. Dr. Marrella was a well- respected, passionate and dedicated physician. He was a great teacher and mentor with the highest ethical standards and generosity, making many house calls and not charging those patients unable to pay. He volunteere­d his services as a physician for many summers at Camp We Ha Kee in northern Wisconsin where his daughter was a camper. Jack had many hobbies including fishing, hunting, golfing, attending Notre Dame football games, and piloting his special Bonanza Airplane all over the United States. To know Jack was to know his legendary Italian cooking skills. Family and friends always left the Marrella home full of laughter, love and a delicious meal. His favorite pursuit, however, was spending time with his family and delighted in all of their accomplish­ments. He left an indelible impact on everyone who knew him. He will be missed.

Memorial visitation will be held Friday, September 8, 2017 from 3: 00 to 8: 00 p. m. at N. H.

Scott & Hanekamp Funeral Home, 1240 Waukegan Rd., Glenview ( just south of Lake Ave. on west side). A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 10: 00 a. m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 1775 Grove St. ( at Church St.), Glenview. Interment All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to JourneyCar­e, 2050 Claire Court, Glenview, IL 60025 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 would be greatly appreciate­d.
