Federer, Nadal advance

Roger Federer breezed in the third round at the U. S. Open on Saturday, knocking off 31st- seeded Feliciano Lopez 6- 3, 6- 3, 7- 5.

Federer, who improved to 13- 0 against Lopez and 33- 1 in night matches at the Open, had only 16 unforced errors. He averaged 62 errors in his first two matches, both of which went five sets.

Federer advances to play 33rd- seeded Philip Kohlschrei­ber. Federer is 11- 0 against the German.

No. 1 seed Rafael Nadal dropping the first set, but rallied to beat Leonardo Mayer 6- 7 ( 3), 6- 3, 6- 1, 6- 4. Nadal next plays 64th- ranked Alexandr Dolgopolov, who is under scrutiny from anticorrup­tion investigat­ors because of unusual betting.

SOCCER Fire snap 4- game skid

Bastian Schweinste­iger scored the lone goal in the 57th minute to lead the visiting Fire to a 1- 0 victory over the Montreal Impact. It was Schweinste­iger’s third goal with the Fire ( 13- 9- 5), who snapped a four- game losing streak. The Impact played with only 10 men for the final 40 minutes after defender Deian Boldor got a red card for a spikes- up tackle on Schweinste­iger.

Spain ended Italy’s 11year unbeaten run in qualifiers with a 3- 0 win in Madrid, moving closer to securing a World Cup spot. The Italians hadn’t lost a qualifier — World Cup or European Championsh­ip — in 56 games, dating back to September 2006.

GOLF Rahm leads at Dell

Jon Rahm made five birdies and an eagle over his last 10 holes, giving him a 5- under 66 and a two- shot lead after two rounds of the Dell Technologi­es Championsh­ip, the second leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs, in Norton, Massachuse­tts.

One day after he birdied four of his last five holes, he made a 12- foot eagle putt on the par- 5 18th and then shot 31 on the front nine to reach 9- under 133.

Dustin Johnson, the world’s No. 1 player who had a one- shot lead going into the second round, had a pair of double bogeys after a quick start and needed a birdie on the 18th hole to keep from falling further behind. Johnson shot a 72 and was five shots behind.

Paul Casey had a 65 and was two shots off the lead along with Adam Hadwin ( 65), Kevin Streelman ( 65) and Kyle Stanley ( 68).

MISCELLANE­OUS Harden donates $ 1M

Houston Rockets point guard James Harden says he will donate $ 1 million to the city of Houston to aid in Harvey recovery.

Kevin Harvick ( 177.730 mph) edged Martin Truex ( 177.077 mph) to win the pole for NASCAR’s Southern 500 Sunday in Darlington, South Carolina. AP
