Osweiler back as backup QB for Broncos

-

After being cut by the Browns on Saturday, Brock Osweiler is returning to Denver as the Broncos’ backup quarterback.

Provided he passes his physical Monday, Osweiler will serve as Trevor Siemian’s understudy. The Broncos needed another quarterback because Paxton Lynch will miss a month or more with a sprained throwing shoulder.

The Browns will pay Osweiler his $ 16 million guaranteed salary this season minus the offset from the Broncos. The minimum for a sixth- year pro is $ 775,000

The Broncos also broke up the “No Fly Zone,” releasing three- time Pro Bowl strong safety T. J. Ward with a year left on his contact.

Colts get Brissett for Dorsett

The Colts activated quarterback Andrew Luck from the physically unable- to- perform list and added depth at the position, acquiring Jacoby Brissett from the Patriots for receiver Phillip Dorsett.

Brissett gives the Colts some insurance with Luck still working his way back from shoulder surgery. Dorsett, a first- round pick in 2015, gives the Patriots another capable receiver with Julian Edelman out for the season with a knee injury.

Vikings dump guard Boone

The Vikings unexpectedly cut left guard Alex Boone, who signed a four- year contract in 2016 worth as much as $ 26.8 million. He rejected a pay cut and now will count $ 3.4 million against the salary cap even if he joins another team.

Browns add Coates

The Browns addressed their biggest need, acquiring wide receiver Sammie Coates in a trade with the Steelers for a 2018 sixth- round pick. The Browns receive a 2019 seventh- round pick.
