Davis gets Sparty off to quick start

Brian Lewerke threw two touchdown passes to Felton Davis in the first quarter, and Michigan State held on for a 17- 10 victory over visiting Iowa on Saturday.

The Spartans ( 3- 1, 1- 0 Big Ten) dominated early, and their defense forced two crucial turnovers in the third quarter. Iowa ( 3- 2, 0- 2) managed only 19 yards rushing and has now lost its first two conference games for the first time since 2008.

Davis surpassed his career high in receptions before halftime and finished with nine for 114 yards. His touchdown catches of 22 and 6 yards gave Michigan State a 14- 0 lead, and that was enough for the Spartans to come away with an important home victory.

Akrum Wadley scored for Iowa on a nine- yard run in the second quarter, but he was held to 30 yards on 17 carries.

Maryland 31, Minnesota 24

Ty Johnson rushed for 130 yards and a 34- yard touchdown run with 1: 10 to play to lift the Terrapins over the host Golden Gophers.

Max Bortenschl­ager completed 18 of 28 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score for Maryland ( 3- 1). Lorenzo Harrison III added 75 yards rushing and the Terrapins racked up 262 yards on the ground against a Minnesota defense that was ranked No. 1 in the country against the run.

Conor Rhoda was 13- for- 26 for 229 yards, a touchdown and two intercepti­ons for Minnesota ( 3- 1). Tyler Johnson had three catches for 69 yards, but the Golden Gophers rushed for just 80 yards.

D. J. Moore caught eight passes for 90 yards and a touchdown for Maryland.

Ohio State 56, Rutgers 0

J. T. Barrett threw three touchdown passes and became the school’s career passing yardage leader in leading the 11th- ranked Buckeyes to a 56- 0 victory over the host Scarlet Knights.

Mike Weber ran for a career- high three touchdowns and Ohio State ( 41, 2- 0 Big Ten) blanked Rutgers ( 1- 4, 0- 2) for the second consecutiv­e year. The Buckeyes have won three in a row after being upset by Oklahoma.

Ohio State outgained Rutgers 628- 209 and Barrett threw touchdown passes of 70 and 39 yards to Johnnie Dixon in the first half in building a 35- 0 lead.
