MAN ‘ DETAINED BY WITNESS’ AFTER COLUMBUS STATUE VANDALIZED

A man was arrested early Saturday for allegedly vandalizin­g the Christophe­r Columbus statue in Arrigo Park on the Near West Side.

Someone spotted three males defacing the statue at 12: 05 a. m. in the 800 block of South Loomis, according to Chicago Police. When the witness confronted them, the suspects tried to ride away on bicycles.

One of them, a 30- year- old man, fell off his bike and was “detained by the witness” until Monroe District officers arrived and took him into custody, police said. Charges against him were pending.

Self- defense, no charges

A woman who fatally shot a man when he stabbed her multiple times Thursday afternoon in Lawndale will not be charged, police said.

About 4: 05 p. m., the 25- year- old man was shot in the chest when he stabbed the 25- year- old woman multiple times in the 4000 block of West 21st Street, Chicago Police said.

The stabbing was believed to be a domestic incident, police said. The relationsh­ip between the two wasn’t released. The man died at the scene, police said. Charges against the woman were rejected when the shooting was ruled self- defense, police said Saturday. Matthew Hendrickso­n

City marks 500th shooting death this year

An 18- year- old man shot dead early Friday evening in East Chatham was the 500th person to be killed in city gun violence since the start of the year.

According to data maintained by the Chicago Sun- Times, at this point last year, there had been 511 people shot to death. In all, 535 deaths have been ruled homicides in the city since the start of this year. Sun- Times Wire

W. Side pastor gets 3 years for food- program fraud

The founding pastor of a West Side church has been sentenced to more than three years in prison for defrauding a food program for low- income children.

Robbie Wilkerson, 50, pleaded guilty in May to wire fraud and money laundering, according to the U. S. Department of Justice. He was sentenced Friday to 37 months in prison and ordered to pay $ 440,964 in restitutio­n. His wife, Tasha Wilkerson, also pleaded guilty to theft of government funds and was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison, prosecutor­s said. She was ordered to pay $ 40,001 in restitutio­n.
