POLICE: HOME INVADER SHOT MULTIPLE TIMES IN BRONZEVILLE
A homeowner opened fire on a man who was trying to break into a residence late Saturday in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side, police said.
A 44- year- old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body at 10: 54 p. m. as he was trying to break into a home in the 4500 block of South St. Lawrence, according to Chicago Police.
The homeowner told investigators he opened fire after the man forced his way into the home with a crowbar, police said. The suspect jumped into a vehicle, which fled to Mercy Hospital. The man was expected to be transferred in critical condition to Stroger Hospital.
The homeowner, a 60- year- old man, has a valid FOID card and concealed carry permit, police said. Charges were pending against the home invader. Ashlee Rezin
Manaccused of Columbus statue vandalism
Amanwas charged with vandalizing the Christopher Columbus statue in Arrigo Park on the NearWest Side early Saturday— two days before Christopher Columbus Day.
Someone spotted three males defacing the statue at 12: 05 a. m. in the 800 block of South Loomis, according to Chicago Police. When the witness confronted them, the suspects tried to ride away on bicycles.
One of them, 30- yearold Kyle Miskell, fell off his bike and was “detained by the witness” until Monroe District officers arrived and took him into custody, police said.
Miskell, of the Pilsen neighborhood, was charged Sunday with one felony count of criminal damage to government property and criminal defacement of property, police said. Sun- TimesWire
4 killed inweekend violence as city tops 500th shooting death
A man shot dead Friday evening was the 500th person to be killed in city gun violence since the start of the year during a weekend in which four people were killed and at least 23 others wounded in Chicago shootings.
The city reached 500 shooting homicides about a week later than it did last year, on Sept. 29, 2016, according to data maintained by the Chicago Sun- Times. At this point last year, there had been 511 people shot to death.
In all, 537 deaths have been ruled homicides in the city since the start of this year, according to SunTimes data. Sun- TimesWire
Woman injured, thought fireworkwas candle
Three people were injured when a firework was accidentally set off during a gathering Saturday night near north suburban Antioch.
A man brought fireworks to a home in the 21800 block ofWest North Avenue in unincorporated Antioch Township just after 7 p. m., according to the Lake County sheriff’s office.
A 30 year- oldWoodstock woman picked up the rocket, which police described as “red, white, and blue, and approximately the size of a quarter- stick of dynamite.” Thinking it was a candle, she lit it and it exploded, leaving her with a serious hand injury. She was taken to a hospital.
Justin R. Kennedy, 28, of the 1200 block of Blakely Street inWoodstock, was charged with one felony count of reckless conduct and a misdemeanor count of endangering the life/ health of a child, police said. Sun- TimesWire
Death of infant in South Shore ruled homicide
The Cook County medical examiner’s office has ruled the death of a monthold girl who was found unresponsive Saturday morning in the South Shore neighborhood a homicide by assault.
Officers responded about 6 a. m. to the 6700 block of South East End, where the infant was reported unresponsive, according to Chicago Police.
The infant, identified as Toriella Turpin, was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she died at 6: 42 a. m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy Sunday found the girl died of blunt force injuries of the head from an assault, the medical examiner’s office said. Her death was ruled a homicide. JacobWittich
