Ex- Chicago cop dead in Plainfield murder- suicide
A woman was killed and her ex- husband, a former Chicago Police officer, was found dead later Saturday in an apparent murder- suicide in southwest suburban Plainfield.
About 12: 30 p. m., officers were called when Elaine M. Zene, 65, was shot in the parking lot of a Jewel- Osco at 1340 S. Route 59 in Plainfield, according to Plainfield Police Chief John Konopek and the Will County coroner’s office.
Zene, who lived in Woodridge, died at Bolingbrook Hospital. A short time later, investigators identified a suspect and went to a home on Walnut Circuit near 119th Street in Plainfield, Konopek said. When officers arrived, they heard a gunshot. A SWAT team was sent in and found Raymond T. Zene, 72, dead inside a vehicle in the garage, authorities said. The Plainfield resident is believed to have shot himself in the chest. Raymond Zene was a Chicago Police officer from 1966- 96. Konopek said the two were once married.
OSHA investigating UPS worker pinned by trailer
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was investigating after a worker was pinned by a trailer early Tuesday at a UPS facility in southwest suburban Bedford Park. The worker was airlifted to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Information on his condition was not available.
Police: Chicago driver strikes Barrington cop trying to pull him over
A Chicago man reportedly following a vehicle in northwest suburban Barrington struck an officer who was trying to pull him over, only to be captured after driving away, Barrington police said.
Atlas A. Davis, 29, of the West Garfield Park neighborhood, was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer, and other charges, according to Barrington police.
Police were contacted about 7: 40 p. m. Monday by amotorist who “thought he was being followed by another vehicle,” police said. The driver was told to drive to the Police Department at 400 N. Northwest Highway, police said.
When the vehicles approached, two officers tried to pull over the suspect vehicle on Northwest Highway.
“The offender then accelerated and struck one of the officers ... then fled the scene and was pursued,” police said. The injured officer had non- life- threatening injuries, police said. He was released Tuesday morning.
Davis on Tuesday was ordered held on a $ 50,000 bond.
Gas leak at Old Orchard lot
A construction crew struck a natural gas line on the southeast side of Westfield Old Orchard mall, according to Skokie police. The break occurred under the parking lot next to Nordstrom, according to witnesses. Several areas of the parking lot were closed. Stores remained open, a witness said.
Man released after woman killed accidentally
A man was released without charges Tuesday after a woman was killed Saturday night when a gun accidentally discharged in a home on the Northwest Side, police said.
About 10 p. m., 21- yearold Nadia Manjarrez and a 37- yearold man were in a home in the 4800 block of West Hutchinson when the gun went off, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Manjarrez, who lived in the neighborhood, was pronounced dead at Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
The gun was recovered, and the man was initially detained for questioning, police said. As of Tuesday morning, the man had been released without charges.
Suspect shoots himself after W. Pullman robbery
A man shot himself in the penis after robbing two people at a business Tuesday in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side.
Just after 6 a. m., the 19- year- old robbed two people at gunpoint of their cellphones, wallets and cash at a business in the 700 block of West 116th Place, according to Chicago Police.
As theman fled, he shot himself in the penis, police said. He was in serious condition and taken into custody.
