Bicyclist fatally hit by car

A bicyclist was fatally struck by a vehicle Monday morning in the Garfield Ridge neighborho­od on the Southwest Side, according to Chicago Police.

About 8 a. m., the 50- yearold woman was riding east on South Archer Avenue when she was struck by a vehicle that was also heading east and turning onto South Lorel Avenue, police said. The driver of the vehicle, a 79- year- old man, was cited for failure to take due care for a pedestrian in the roadway, police said.

2 in custody after false report at Joliet Central

Two people were in custody after someone called in a false report of a person with a gun at Joliet Central High School Wednesday morning.

About 8 a. m., someone called 911, said he worked at Walgreens and claimed to see a black male wearing a blue hoodie walking toward the high school with what appeared to be a handgun in his waistband, according to Joliet police.

The same person called again and said the suspect was walking into the school with the gun, police said.

The school was immediatel­y placed on lockdown. The caller was located in the school cafeteria, and his informatio­n was found to be false.

Another 911 call was received from another person saying he saw someone get out of a vehicle with what he called “the tip of a rifle,” police said. Officers also found the second caller, and his informatio­n was also found to not be credible.

The school day resumed as normal. Both callers were taken to the police department, and charges were pending, police said.

Sex offender arrested after entering school

A sex offender was arrested after he entered a southwest suburban high school last week while experienci­ng a medical issue.

Jacob C. Sullivan, 42, approached a faculty member in the parking lot of Plainfield East High School at 12001 Naperville Rd. on Oct. 25 and asked for assistance, according to Plainfield police.

When the faculty member said he couldn’t help, Sullivan walked into the school, where he was met by other faculty members who called an ambulance, police said. He was taken to a hospital.

The school resource officer was notified of the incident and learned Sullivan was a registered sex offender not allowed on school property, police said. Sullivan was taken into custody Tuesday, police said. Sullivan, a Plainfield resident, was charged with one felony count of presence within a school zone by a child sex offender, police said. His bond was set at $ 100,000.

2 men, including cabbie, killed in North Side crash

Two men, including a taxi driver, were killed in a crash early Wednesday on the Near North Side.

A Hyundai Sonata was speeding south on Clark Street at 3: 18 a. m. when it ran a red light and rearended a cab that was also southbound in the intersecti­on with Oak Street, according to Chicago Police.

The cab driver, 52- yearold Mekonnen S. Kassa of the North Side West Ridge neighborho­od, was taken to Northweste­rn Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The driver of the Hyundai, Sungde Joof, 40, of the Greater Grand Crossing neighborho­od, died at Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

Walmart fires worker after freezer prank

Elgin police were investigat­ing a report from a Walmart employee who said two other employees locked her in a freezer, and Walmart has fired an employee it says led the prank.

The employee, a 21- yearold woman from Elgin, said the incident happened about 5: 30 a. m. Sunday at the store at 1100 S. Randall Road, Deputy Chief Bill Wolf said. She made a report at the police station that day.

The woman said two people she worked with shut the door to the freezer, and she was trapped for about five minutes until someone heard her banging on the door and let her out. “We take the matter seriously, acted on it the moment we found out, and the individual responsibl­e for the prank is no longer with the company,” Walmart spokesman Charles Crowson said.

2 men shot in Ravenswood

Two men were shot early Wednesday in the Ravenswood neighborho­od on the North Side.

The men, 20 and 23, were shot at 1: 32 a. m. while sitting in a minivan parked in the 4600 block of North Greenview, according to Chicago Police. The older man was in critical condition, police said. The younger man was listed in serious condition.
