Huskies suffer first MAC loss at Toledo

-

Logan Woodside threw for 361 yards to become Toledo’s career passing leader, and the Rockets beat Northern Illinois 27- 17 on Thursday night at the Glass Bowl in Toledo, Ohio.

Woodside’s 31- yard completion to Darryl Richards in the third quarter broke Bruce Gradkowski’s record of 9,225 yards from 2002- 05. Woodside sits at 9,288.

It was NIU’s first loss at Toledo since 2009.

‘‘ We lost to a good football team tonight,” NIU coach Rod Carey said. ‘‘ That being said, we made too many mistakes and hurt ourselves. The offense didn’t do enough and the defense had a hard time getting off the field on third down.”

NIU totaled 430 yards, including 185 on the ground, led by Marcus Jones’ 80 yards on 14 carries, and converted 8 of 17 third downs.

NIU ( 6- 3, 4- 1 Mid- American Conference) started the second half with an 80- yard scoring drive, capped by Marcus Childers’ oneyard run for a 14- 10 lead. But Toledo answered with a 13- yard touchdown run by Terry Swanson with 4: 03 remaining in the third quarter.

Childers was 23- for- 43 passing for 235 yards and two interceptions.

On Toledo’s next possession, Jackson Abresch blocked a punt and gave the Huskies possession at the Toledo 10. NIU was forced to settle for a field goal to cut the deficit to 24- 17.

‘‘ That was disappointing,” Carey said. ‘‘ We got the block, we needed to punch it in for the score.’’

Swanson had 116 yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries for Toledo ( 8- 1, 5- 0). Diontae Johnson had 10 catches for 166 yards.

Frank Nutile, making his second consecutive start in place of the in- jured Logan Marchi, threw for 289 yards and four touchdowns to lift the host Owls ( 4- 5, 2- 3 American Athletic). Navy ( 5- 3, 3- 3) had been 12- 0 at Lincoln Financial Field, including a 10- 0 mark against rival Army. The Midshipmen rushed for only 136 yards, well below their nation- best average of 376.

This and that

New Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos, who unsuccessfully tried to start beer sales in the general seating areas at Washington State’s football stadium, says he has no plans for alcohol sales at Memo- rial Stadium or the school’s other sports venues.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly announced that tight end Alize Mack ( concussion) will not play Saturday against Wake Forest.

Stanford coach David Shaw said that K. J. Costello will start at quarterback instead of Keller Chryst, who has started 13 of the past 14 games but has completed just 53.8 percent of his passes this season.

Florida interim coach Randy Shannon said that graduate transfer Malik Zaire will start Saturday against Missouri.
