Nine players, Miller on special Hall ballot
Jack Morris, Steve Garvey, Tommy John and longtime players’ union chief Marvin Miller are among the 10 names on the ballot for Hall of Fame election next month.
The candidates were revealed Monday, and the results of the voting of a 16- person committee — 12 votes are needed for election — will be released Dec. 10 at the winter meetings in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
Don Mattingly, Dale Murphy, Dave Parker, Ted Simmons,
Luis Tiant and Alan Trammell are also on the Modern Baseball Era ballot, which recognizes those whose biggest contributions came from1970 to 1987.
Astros second baseman Jose Altuve, Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge and Indians infielder Jose
Ramirez were named finalists for the American League Most Valuable Player award.
Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Gold schmidt, Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton and Reds first baseman Joey Votto are the finalists for the National League MVP award.

Illini DC Nickerson leaves team after mom dies
Illinois defensive coordinator Hardy Nickerson is on leave from the team after the unexpected death of his mother Sunday. Coach Lovie Smith said that Nickerson was on his way home to California and that there is no timetable for his return.
Purdue quarterback David Blough will miss the rest of the season after suffering a dislocated right ankle and a broken right fibula Saturday against Illinois. He will have surgery Tuesday.

Michigan State forward Miles Bridges ( 61 of 65 votes), Notre Dame forward Bonzie Colson ( 47), Arizona swingman Allonzo Trier ( 39), Villanova guard Jalen Brunson ( 33) and Missouri forward Michael Porter Jr. ( 30) were named preseason AllAmericans by an Associated Press panel.
