Sherman injured in Seahawks’ win

-

Russell Wilson threw two touchdown passes to Jimmy Graham and the Seahawks added to their history of success in Arizona with a 22- 16 victory over the host Cardinals on Thursday night.

Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman suffered a ruptured Achilles, coach Pete Carroll said. Sherman exited the game in the third quarter and did not return.

The Seahawks ( 6- 3) limited Adrian Peterson to 29 yards on 21 carries in a game marred by a host of injuries and penalties, most of them against Seattle, to improve to 4- 0- 1 in Arizona in Bruce Arians’ five seasons as coach of the Cardinals ( 4- 5).

Seattle’s Kam Chancellor forced a fumble by Peterson on Arizona’s first offensive play and later tackled him in the end zone for a safety.

Cowboys’ Elliott loses appeal

The emergency injunction request by the NFL Players Association on behalf of Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott was denied by the 2nd U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday.

The ruling means Elliott’s sixgame suspension is back on, and he is currently ineligible to play Sunday against the Falcons.

The next hearing in Elliott’s case is set for Dec. 1. Pending unforeseen legal intervention, he will miss four games — against the Falcons, Eagles, Chargers and Redskins — before getting another court date.

Pats claim Bennett off waivers

The Patriots claimed veteran tight end Martellus Bennett off waivers.

The Packers waived him with the designation that he failed to disclose a physical condition. In claiming Bennett, the Patriots inherit the three- year, $ 21 million contract that he had signed with the Packers.

Goodell expected to get extension

The NFL expects a five- year contract extension with commissioner Roger Goodell to be finalized soon, despite a threatened lawsuit by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart said Thursday that “our expectation is this will be wrapped up soon, but we can’t project an actual date.”

The extension would carry through 2024. Goodell became commissioner in 2006.

This and that

The Eagles signed defensive tackle Tim Jernigan to a four- year, $ 48 million extension, with $ 26 million guaranteed.

The Colts released two- time Pro Bowl cornerback Vontae Davis. The move comes less than 24 hours after Davis complained about how the team handled his demotion.

Former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez suffered severe damage to parts of the brain that play an important role in memory, impulse control and behavior, according to a researcher who studied his brain.

A video review of 459 reported concussions sustained during the past two NFL seasons has found far more occurred on passing plays than any other plays.
