Beltran calls it quits after Series title
Outfielder Carlos Beltran said Monday he is retiring after winning his first World Series title in his 20th major- league season.
Beltran, 40, made the announcement 12 days after the Astros beat the Dodgers in Game 7 of theWorld Series. He finishes his career with a .279 batting average, 435 home runs and 1,587 RBI with seven teams.
Beltran was a nine- time All- Star whowon the 1999 American League Rookie of the Year award and three Gold Gloves, but his production dropped dramatically this season. He hit .295 with 29 homers and 93 RBI for the Yankees and Rangers in 2016, then batted .231 with 14 homers and 51 RBI for the Astros.
Later in the day, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman didn’t rule out the possibility of interviewing Beltran for the team’s managerial vacancy. The Yankees already have interviewed third- base coach Rob Thomson and former Indians and Mariners manager Eric Wedge and are scheduled to interview Giants bench coach Hensley Meulens and ESPN analyst Aaron Boone.
