Purdue springs upset in Iowa City

-

Elijah Sindelar, playing in place of injured David Blough, threw for 229 yards and a career- high three touchdowns, and Purdue moved a victory away from bowl eligibility with a 24- 15 victory Saturday against Iowa in Iowa City.

Anthony Mahoungou had 135 yards receiving and caught two of Sindelar’s touchdown passes in the first 3: 01 of the second half for the Boilermakers ( 5- 6, 3- 5 Big Ten). Purdue earned its first Big Ten road victory of the season and snapped the Hawkeyes’ four- game winning streak in the series.

‘‘ A big win for our program,’’ Boilermakers coach Jeff Brohm said. ‘‘ We’ve been able to hang in there and fight through adversity. Couldn’t be prouder of our guys.’’

Purdue drove 75 yards in three plays to start the third quarter, a drive capped by Mahoungou’s 42- yard touchdown grab. The Boilermakers then needed only three more plays to open a 21- 9 lead on Mahoungou’s 16- yard touchdown reception with 11: 59 left in the third.

Nate Stanley passed for 176 yards but was sacked six times for Iowa ( 6- 5, 3- 5), which will finish with a losing record in Big Ten play for the first time since 2012.

‘‘ They were just ready to play more than we were,’’ Stanley said. ‘‘ They came out and played a little harder than we did.’’

Michigan State 17, Maryland 7

LJ Scott ran for 147 yards and a touchdown to spark the No. 17 Spartans ( 8- 3, 6- 2) to a snowy victory against the Terrapins ( 4- 7, 2- 6) in East Lansing, Michigan.

Michigan State rushed for 271 yards, and that was about the only way it could move the ball in the elements. Quarterback Brian Lewerke was 2- for- 14 for 20 yards, and one of his completions was a shovel pass late in the third quarter.

Maryland ( 4- 7, 2- 6) wasn’t much better through the air until the fourth quarter. Max Bortenschlager finished 13- for- 25 for 121 yards.

Indiana 41, Rutgers 0

Richard Lagow threw for 236 yards and two touchdowns, Morgan Ellison ran for 149 yards and two more touchdowns and the Hoosiers ( 5- 6, 2- 6) overcame a lightning delay of nearly two hours in the third quarter to blank the Scarlet Knights ( 4- 7, 3- 5) in Bloomington, Indiana.
