Bowl drought over for Boilermakers
Jackson Anthrop ran for two scores, Elijah Sindelar threw for two more and Markell Jones rushed for a career high 217 yards Saturday, leading host Purdue past Indiana 31- 24 and into its first bowl game in five years.
The Boilermakers ( 6- 6, 4- 5) won three of their last four to reclaim the Old Oaken Bucket for the first time since 2012. Jeff Brohm became the first Purdue coach to reach the postseason in his first year since the late Joe Tiller in 1997.
“You can see the smile on my face. It’s a great moment for our football team, for our university, for our fans,” coach Jeff Brohm said. “Definitely, a big win for us.”
Indiana ( 5- 7, 2- 7) had a two- game winning streak snapped.
Cornhuskers shed Riley
Nebraska fired coach Mike Riley after three seasons in which he was unable to return the Cornhuskers to national prominence let alone make them a factor in the Big Ten. Riley was under contract through February 2021 and is due a buyout of more than $ 6.6 million. The Cornhuskers finished the season 4- 8 after a 56- 14 loss at home to Iowa on Friday.
Wisconsin 31, Minnesota 0
Alex Hornibrook threw three touchdown passes without an interception for the No. 5 Badgers, who easily remained unbeaten and recorded their 14th consecutive victory over the host Gophers. Jonathan Taylor rushed for 149 yards on 20 carries, including a 53- yard scoring sprint. The Gophers suffered consecutive shutouts for the first time since 1950.
Penn State 66, Maryland 3
Trace McSorley tossed two touchdown passes and ran for a score to cap an outstanding regular season and carry the No. 10 Nittany Lions over the host Terrapins. McSorley went 22- for- 33 for 237 yards and ran seven times for 36 yards.
Penn State has won 10 games in successive seasons for the first time since 2008- 09.
Michigan State 40, Rutgers 7
Brian Lewerke threw for a touchdown and ran for another and the No. 16 Spartans held the ball for more than 47 minutes in defeating the host Scarlet Knights. Michigan State ( 9- 3) flipped its overall record from a year ago.
