CPD: Armed offender shot, critically wounded by police

An armed offender was shot and critically wounded during an encounter with Chicago Police Wednesday afternoon in the South Side Washington Park neighborho­od, according to CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

The shots were fired by police at 2: 14 p. m. in the 6100 block of South King Drive, police said.

The suspect was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, according to Guglielmi and Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford. A weapon was recovered, Guglielmi said.

Man, 28, fatally struck by own vehicle on I- 294

A 28- year- old man died after he was run over by his own vehicle Sunday morning on the Tri- State Tollway in southwest suburban Worth.

David E. Mahay was driving north on I- 294 near mile marker 15.5 in Worth at 6: 42 a. m. when he lost control of his vehicle and struck the guardrail and concrete median barrier, according to Illinois State Police. Mahay, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle and thrown onto the road, where he was run over by his own vehicle, police said.

Mahay died at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. He lived in the Mount Greenwood neighborho­od on Chicago’s Far South Side.

4 injured in wrong- way Lake Shore Drive crash

Alcohol is thought to have played a role in a wrong- way crash late Tuesday on Lake Shore Drive that left four people were injured on the South Side.

A 2017 Toyota Camry struck a 1997 Nissan Quest minivan about 11: 10 p. m. while the Camry was traveling south in the northbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive near 15th Street, according to Chicago Police.

The 48- year- old man driving the minivan and his two passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospitals, police said.

The 30- year- old man driving the Camry was taken to Northweste­rn Memorial Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

Alcohol is suspected to be a factor, and charges were pending Wednesday, police said. The Camry driver was cited for driving the wrong way, not having insurance and failure to yield.

Man allegedly stole packages from porches

A 29- year- old man was charged with stealing UPS packages from porches Tuesday in south suburban Lansing.

Police responded about 12: 30 p. m. to the 17900 block of Williams Street, where a witness reported a male following a UPS truck in a Volkswagen Touareg and stealing packages off of porches, according to Lansing police. The Volkswagen was spotted parked down the street from a UPS truck, police said. Officers spoke with the driver, who gave several unsubstant­iated reasons for why he was in the area.

Lelan Cooper, of south suburban Calumet City, was taken into custody, police said. Several packages and items that did not belong to Cooper were found in his vehicle. He was charged with felony theft, police said.

Schaumburg smash- grab targets diamond store

A group of robbers made off with an unknown amount of diamonds in a smash- andgrab robbery Wednesday night in northwest suburban Schaumburg.

Officers were called just after 7 p. m. to a Jared jewelry store at 1700 E. Woodfield Road, according to Schaumburg police.

Three people ran into the store with hammers, smashed a display case and grabbed loose diamonds, police said. The group ran off to a vehicle and drove away.

Police said all three were wearing dark clothes and hooded sweatshirt­s with the hood pulled tightly around their faces.

No weapons were shown, and no injuries were reported, police said.
