American Airlines Flight 191, a DC- 10, goes into a roll after losing an engine following takeoff from O’Hare Airport. All 271 on board and two on the ground die.

July 31, 1985 Fire destroys the Arlington Park horse track in Arlington Heights. Aug. 28, 1990 A tornado churns through the far southwest suburb of Plainfield, killing 29 and injuring more than 350. July 13- 15, 1995 Extreme heat in Chicago claims more than 700 victims — the deadliest heatwave in the city’s history. Most of the victims were poor and/ or elderly. Oct. 25, 1995 Seven teens die and about two dozen are injured when a Metra train crashes into a school bus in northwest suburban Fox River Grove. Feb. 17, 2003 Twenty- one people die and dozens more are injured in a mad rush for the stairwell and exits at the packed E2 nightclub on the near South Side. The stampede begins when security guards use pepper spray to stop a fight inside the club, which sits above a restaurant. City officials say the nightspot was operating without required permits. June 29, 2003 Thirteen young people die shortly after midnight when a three- story porch pancakes to the ground in Lincoln Park. In response to the tragedy, City Hall orders a flurry of porch inspection­s citywide. April 20, 2004 Eight people die when a tornado touches down in Utica in LaSalle County. The twister destroys more than 100 homes and half of downtown Utica. Dec. 8, 2005

A Southwest Airlines jet slides off the end of the snowy runway at Midway Airport and strikes a car, killing Joshua Woods, 6, who was inside the car.
