Ariz. State tops No. 2 Kansas

-

Former Duke star Bobby Hurley is no stranger to college basketball lore. So when his Arizona State team traveled to Allen Fieldhouse to face Kansas on Sunday, he knew what it was in for.

‘‘ No one really wins here,’’ Hurley said. ‘‘ You come in here, most of the time you’re not leaving real happy.’’

Well, the No. 16 Sun Devils sure did. Tra Holder scored 29 points, and Arizona State upset the No. 2 Jayhawks 95- 85.

Shannon Evans II added 22 points and Remy Martin 21 for the Sun Devils ( 9- 0). Arizona State shot 50 percent from threepoint range and 50.8 percent overall to hand Kansas ( 7- 2) its second consecutive loss. The Jayhawks fell to unranked Washington on Wednesday.

‘‘ I didn’t really have to coach a whole lot,’’ Hurley said. ‘‘ These guys sitting with me here deserve all the credit.’’

After a slow start that forced Hurley to use a timeout less than two minutes into the game, the Sun Devils found themselves down by 13 points before making their first field goal. Arizona State got back into the game, though, trimming its deficit to three points at halftime and outscoring Kansas 58- 42 in the second half.

For the Jayhawks, the difference was defense— or the lack thereof.

‘‘ It wasn’t our offense,’’ coach Bill Self said. ‘‘ Hey, if you score 85 at home, you’re supposed to win.’’

Lagerald Vick led Kansas with 25 points. Devonte’ Graham added 19 points and eight assists.

Villanova 77, La Salle 68

Phil Booth and Donte Di Vincenzo each scored 18 points to help the No. 4Wildcats ( 10- 0) avoid an upset with a victory against the Explorers ( 5- 6) in Philadelphia.

Villanova was sloppy, struggled from three- point range and couldn’t shake La Salle until the final minutes. Booth put the Wildcats ahead with three free throws and followed with an assist on a threepointer by Di Vincenzo that finally gave them a bit of breathing room.

B. J. Johnson led the Explorers with 21 points.

Purdue 86, IUPUI 61

Carsen Edwards scored a career- high 27 points, and the No. 21 Boilermakers ( 10- 2) used a 20- 0 run spanning the first and second halves to coast past the Jaguars ( 2- 6) in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Isaac Haas added 14 points and six rebounds and Vincent Edwards 12 points and 12 rebounds to help Purdue give coach Matt Painter his 300th career victory. Maurice Kirby scored 16 points and Jaylen Minnett 12 for IUPUI.
