Morris, Trammell picked for Hall
Former Tigers teammates Jack Morris and Alan Trammell were elected Sunday to the Hall of Fame by its Modern Era committee, completing a joint journey from Motown to Cooperstown.
Morris, a big- game right- hander, and Trammell, a star shortstop, were picked by 16 voters who considered 10 candidates whose biggest contributions came from 1970 to 1987. Morris got 14 votes and Trammell 13, one more than the required three- quarters.
They will be enshrined July 29 and, fittingly, will go in together. They began their big- league careers with the Tigers in 1977 and played 13 seasons alongside each other.
‘‘ The time I’ve spent wondering if this day would ever come seems to be vanished and erased because it did come, and it’s amazing,’’ said Morris, who won 254 games in his career and won World Series with three teams ( 1984 Tigers, 1991 Twins and 1992 Blue Jays).
Trammell, who batted .281 with 185 home runs and 1,003 RBI in his career, felt overwhelmed.
‘‘ I came to the realization that it might not happen, and I was OK with that,’’ said Trammell, the most valuable player of the Tigers’ 1984 World Series victory against the Padres and a former Cubs bench coach. ‘‘ If people thought it was a tad short, I could live with that.’’
Former catcher Ted Simmons fell one vote short, and former Major League Baseball Players Association chief Marvin Miller came up five short.
‘‘ It’s not a big surprise,’’ Peter Miller, one of Miller’s sons, said from Japan. ‘‘ I think my father’s place in history is understood by all baseball players, all baseball fans and the general public.’’
Cards, Gregerson strike deal
Multiple outlets reported the Cardinals and reliever Luke Gregerson agreed to terms on a twoyear, $ 11 million contract, pending the results of a physical.
Gregerson would get $ 5 million in each of the next two seasons, and the deal includes a $ 6 million team option for 2020 with a $ 1 million buyout.
Gregerson was 2- 3 with a 4.57 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 61 innings last season for the World Series champion Astros. He didn’t allow a run in five postseason appearances.
Red Sox’ Wright arrested
Red Sox knuckleballer Steven Wright was arrested and charged with domestic assault Friday at his home in Tennessee.
Wright has been plagued by injuries since making the American League All- Star team in 2016. That season ended after he injured his shoulder as a pinch runner, and he made only five starts in 2017 because of a knee injury.
