FRESH FACES EMERGING
The season is more than a month old, and some freshmen already are starting to make a name for themselves. This year has been better than most. If there is one upside to the lack of talent in the senior class, it’s that plenty of freshmen are getting a chance to play significant varsity minutes.
That was the case last season, as well, and it had a major impact on the Class 3A state tournament, with Morgan Park freshman Nimari Burnett and Fenwick freshman DJ Steward leading their teams in scoring in the title game.
Here is a look at some of the Class of 2021 players who are making an impact.
Blake Peters, Evanston
The Wildkits have three freshmen playing significant minutes. Peters, a tremendous shooter, already has worked himself into the lineup. He led the team with 16 points and nine rebounds against No. 6 Niles North.
Evanston junior Jaheim Holden said Peters is the best shooter on the team.
“Hands down,” Holden said. “He works on his shot nonstop, after practice and at 6 a. m.”
Chris Hodges, Schaumburg
Some recruiting analysts consider him to be the top prospect in the class, and he already has a scholarship offer from DePaul. The 6- 8 forward led the Saxons with 16 points against Grayslake North.
Ahmad Bynum, Simeon
The Wolverines’ top freshman made his debut at the Chicago Elite Classic. He’s also a favorite of recruiting analysts. Bynum is fighting for minutes in a crowded backcourt.
Max Christie, Rolling Meadows
Hodges isn’t the only young star in the Mid- Suburban League. Christie has been a sensation, too. He scored 20 points against No. 25 Prospect on Thursday. The 6- 4 guard scored 17 in a win against Hoffman Estates earlier this month and scored 24 against Collins early in the season.
Conor Enright, Mundelein
The Mustangs are a surprising 6- 3, and their freshman point guard is a primary reason. Enright scored 14 points against Vernon Hills.
Darrion Jones, Bogan
Bengals coach Arthur Goodwin said Jones is a star. The strong, fast guard opened plenty of eyes against Morgan Park earlier this month, scoring 11 points.
KimahriWilson, Carmel
The stylish point guard has fit right in with the Corsairs. He’s a talented creator and a pass- first player, but he did score 15 points againstWaukegan.
Anthony Sayles and Troy D’Amico, Notre Dame
The Dons are in a transition year, but the future is bright. Sayles, a 6- 1 guard, is the team’s second- leading scorer at 12.5 points. D’Amico, a 6- 5 forward, is third at just under 10 points.
Trey Spires, Clemente
The freshman point guard has been rock- solid. He’s confident and poised and has the Wildcats off to an 8- 2 start.
Other freshmen who have emerged this season: Jaylin Gibson, Evanston; Jalen Butler, Niles North; LaShaun Glover, Harlan; Bryce Hopkins, Fenwick; Markeise Irving, Morgan Park; Boopie Miller, Morgan Park; and KentonWright, Hillcrest.
