Vikings OC Shurmur gets Giants’ job

-

Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur was hired Monday as the Giants’ head coach.

Shurmur replaces Ben McAdoo, who was fired in early December after the Giants struggled to a 2- 10 record. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo took over for the last four games and went 1- 3.

Shurmur was one of six candidates to interview for the job. He returns to the head- coaching ranks for the first time since leading the Browns in 2011- 12.

The Giants won’t introduce Shurmur until Friday. A winter storm in the Midwest will prevent him from traveling Tuesday to New Jersey, and he will be at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, from late Tuesday through Thursday.

Cards pick Panthers’ DC as coach

Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks was hired as the Cardinals’ head coach and agreed to terms on a four- year contract with a team option for a fifth.

Wilks spent one season as the Panthers’ defensive coordinator after spending five seasons as their secondary coach. He replacesBruce Arians, who retired after going 8- 8 in his fifth season at the helm.

The Panthers wasted little time replacing Wilks, promoting defensive line coach Eric Washington to coordinator. He had been their defensive line coach for seven years.

Reports: Browns to hireOCHaley

Multiple outlets reported the Browns are hiring former Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley, who was fired last week after six seasons with the Steelers.

Haley, a former head coach with the Chiefs, will take over play- calling duties from Browns coach Hue Jackson, who has gone 1- 31 in his first two seasons.
