Straily ‘ glad’ Marlins lost Stanton, Yelich
While Giancarlo Stanton and Christian Yelich were happy to be traded by the Marlins, right- hander Dan Straily says he wants to be a cornerstone of the team’s rebuilding plan. And that’s not all.
“I’m glad they’re gone,” Straily said Friday. “If they don’t want to be here, good for them.”
Straily’s reaction to the Marlins’ offseason dismantling under new CEO Derek Jeter differs dramatically from that of fans angered by the moves and players wanting out because they anticipate lots of losing. Half of the every- day lineup was traded, including Yelich and National League MVP Stanton, and theMarlins received mostly prospects in return.
But Straily said a reboot was justified after eight consecutive losing seasons under former owner Jeffrey Loria.
“I really agreed with what happened,” said Straily, who went 10- 9 last year and might be the opening day starter. “I feel like with the pieces they brought in, this might flip around a little quicker than people realize.”
† All- Star pitcher Jason Vargas and the Mets agreed to a two- year, $ 16 million contract.
† The Brewers agreed to a minor- league contract with left- hander Wade Miley, who had a league- high 93 walks with the Orioles last year.
Woods misses cut at Riviera
TigerWoods had three straight bogeys early on the back nine and finished with a 5- over 76, missing the cut at the Genesis Open at Riviera in Los Angeles. Patrick Cantlay ( 69) and GraemeMcDowell ( 66) shared the lead at 7- under 135 as the second round was ending, with darkness forcing a delay.
Wood waited until the final day Friday to commit to playing in the Honda Classic, his third PGA Tour start as he tries to build up his game for the Masters.
Dixson lights theway for Flames

† Arkansas State sued Miami and is seeking $ 650,000 in damages for failing to reschedule the Sept. 9 football game in Jonesboro, Arkansas, that was cancelled because of the Hurricanes’ travel concerns ahead of Hurricane Irma.
† The Panthers reinstated interim general manager MartyHurney after an NFL investigation found no wrongdoing into charges of harassment by his ex- wife. Hurney had been on a paid leave of absence during the investigation.
