Bernard, age 83, of Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin died on Thursday, February 15, 2018.

Bernard lived a full and accomplish­ed life. He enlisted in the military and became a Marine. He served in the Korean War as an Infantry man from 1952 - 1954. He was awarded the Purple Heart in 1953 and recently received an Ambassador For Peace Medal. After the war he became a Chicago police officer serving for 10 plus years then became a Cook County deputy sheriff for another 15 years. He enjoyed bowling, gardening, fishing, raising animals and spending time with family. He was baptized and received his 1st Communion from St. Joseph’s Church in Grenville, South Dakota. He was a selfless man who cared for everyone around him and will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his son Gregg Gronke, daughter Sharlene Knapp ( husband David) and son Michael Gronke ( wife Lisa). Grandchild­ren include Roman, Logan and Grace. Brother William Gronke. Wife Joan Temme. He was preceded in death by his parents Bernard Gronke Sr. and Martha Ewalt, sisters, Harriot, Evelyn, Marcella, and Lillian, brothers Arnold and Edmund and wife Dolores Morbete.

A Memorial Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at CHURCH AND CHAPEL FUNERAL HOME, 1875 N. Calhoun Rd., Brookfield, WI from 11: 00 AM until time of the Memorial Service at 2: 30 PM.

A visitation and church service will also be held at St. Joseph Church in Grenville, South Dakota from 9: 00 AM - 1: 00 PM, on Saturday, March 3, 2018. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Leukemia Society ( www. lls. org) or the American Cancer Society ( www. cancer. org) in Bernard’s name, would be greatly appreciate­d.
