NU lets another slip away

-

Kevin Huerter scored 18 points and Maryland handed Northwestern another difficult loss, 71- 64, while snapping its own seven- game road losing streak Monday night at Allstate Arena.

With Huerter leading the way, the Terrapins ( 19- 11, 8- 9 Big Ten) won on the road for the first time since Dec. 3.

After blowing a 27- point lead against No. 2 Michigan State in one of the biggest collapses in NCAA history Saturday, the Wildcats ( 15- 14, 6- 10) couldn’t protect an 11- point edge in the second half.

Huerter hit 3 of 6 three- pointers for Maryland while the rest of the team combined to shoot 2- for- 11 from long range. Anthony Cowan Jr. and Dion Wiley each scored 13 points, and the Terrapins turned 14 NU turnovers into 20 points.

It added up to back- to- back wins for the first time since a sevengame run that ended in early January. Beat Michigan on Saturday, and Maryland will head into the Big Ten Tournament with a .500 mark in conference play.

Scottie Lindsey scored 15 points for the Wildcats, who dropped their fourth in a row and blew a doubledigit lead in their third straight game.

“Tonight, with an 11- point lead early in the second half, you’ve got to dig down and close it out,” coach Chris Collins said. “That’s been the story with our season— we haven’t been able to win these kinds of games, and it’s been frustrating.”

UIC 94, Detroit 87

Marcus Ottey and Dikembe Dixson had 20 points each as the host Flames ( 17- 12, 12- 4 Horizon League) held on to win after pulling away with a 21- 5 run that included Clint Robinson’s layup with 5: 14 left.

Jordan Blount added 15 points and 10 rebounds for UIC, which is a game behind Horizon League leaders Wright State and Northern Kentucky. The Flames’ 12 conference wins are their most since 2003- 04 — the last time the school made the NCAA tournament.

Miami 77, Notre Dame 74

Freshman Lonnie Walker IV scored 19 points, hitting 5 of 7 from three- point range, and his deep three gave Miami the lead for good as the Hurricanes rode a late 13- 0 burst to beat the Irish in South Bend.

Miami ( 19- 8, 8- 7) trailed 62- 57 with 7: 51 to go before their decisive run. Notre Dame ( 16- 12, 6- 9) was playing for the first time without Rex Pflueger, who injured his back in Saturday’s win at Boston College.
