Home run derby

On a chilly, overcast Cactus League opening day, the White Sox were outslugged by the Dodgers. The defending National League champs cranked out four homers against a contingent of pitchers that might not make the opening- day roster. Justin Turner went deep against Dylan Covey in the first, KikeHernandez and MattKemp homered against Tyler Danish in the third and Logan Forsythe connected against lefthander Brian Clark in the fifth. The Sox got a threerun shot from shortstop

TimAnderson against C. C. Lee.

Prospect watch

Not much to write home about as right fielder Eloy Jimenez, the No. 4- ranked prospect in baseball, struck out in his only at- bat after entering as a pinch runner. Third baseman Jake Burger, the Sox’ first- round pick in the 2017 draft, struck out and hit into a double play.

Good and bad

Avisail Garcia made a leaping catch against the right- field fence. Second baseman Yoan Moncada botched a rundown play, hitting Turner in the back to extend a big inning.

Somber moment

A moment of silence was observed and caps worn before the game honoring the 17 lives lost at Stoneman Douglas High School.
