Tebow sprains left ankle stepping on sprinkler head

-

Former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow is nursing a sprained left ankle he suffered when his foot got caught on a sprinkler head in the outfield last week at the Mets’ spring- training complex in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Tebow said the incident occurred last Monday or Tuesday.

‘‘ I’m trying to be smart about it and keep [ the ankle] taped,’’ Tebow, who is in his first major- league camp, said after workouts Sunday.

Tebow has been hitting in the batting cage and shagging flies, but he’s avoiding making cuts on the bases. The ankle injury hasn’t hurt his power, though, as he has launched several long home runs during batting practice in recent days.

Martinez update

MLB. com reported the Red Sox apparently still are tweaking the language in outfielder J. D. Martinez’ s contract and aren’t worried about his current physical condition.

Since news broke last week that the sides had agreed on a five- year contract worth $ 110 million, rumors have swirled that Martinez’s physical uncovered a problem. Those fears heightened when NBC Sports Boston reported Friday that the Red Sox and Martinez had agreed to consult ‘‘ additional medical experts.’’

MLB. com reported the Red Sox aren’t worried about Martinez’s current health, but the exam revealed a problem that might arise down the road. Martinez, 30, suffered a sprained ligament in his foot last season and battled an elbow injury the season before. He has missed 85 games in the last two seasons.

Phillies IF has broken leg

Phillies infielder Will Middlebrooks suffered a broken left leg during a collision with teammate Andrew Pullin during a spring- training game Saturday.

Manager Gabe Kapler said that Middlebrooks broke his left fibula and that additional tests were needed to determine whether he also had ankle damage.

Middlebrooks was playing third base and went back into left field in an effort to catch a shallow fly when his ankle tangled underneath Pullin as the ball fell for a single. He was removed from the field on a cart.

Twins add Morrison

Multiple outlets reported the Twins and first baseman/ outfielder Logan Morrison agreed to terms on a one- year, $ 6.5 million contract, pending the results of a physical.

Morrison had a careerhigh 38 home runs and 85 RBI last season for the Rays.

Yanks keep A- Rod around

The Yankees said former slugger Alex Rodriguez is remaining with the team as a special adviser. He had served as an adviser and instructor after his retirement as a player in August 2016 through the end of last season.
