Redbirds advance to Valley final

Phil Fayne scored 13 of his career- high 26 points in overtime, and No. 3 seed Illinois State turned back second- seeded Southern Illinois 76- 68 in a Missouri Valley semifinal Saturday in St. Louis.

Fayne, a 49 percent shooter from the free- throw line, made just 1 of 4 from the line in the final 1: 42, but the one he made sent the game to overtime tied at 56.

The Redbirds ( 18- 14) scored 20 points in overtime after scoring only 20 in the second half. Fayne hit all seven of his free throws in OT.

Armon Fletcher and Sean Lloyd Jr. each scored 15 points for the Salukis ( 20- 13).

Michigan 75, Michigan State 64

Mo Wagner scored 14 of his 15 points in the second half, and the Wolverines moved within a game of its second consecutiv­e Big Ten tournament title with the win, which ended the No. 2- ranked Spartans’ 13- game winning streak.

Muhammad- Ali Abdur- Rahkman and Zavier Simpson also had 15 for the No. 15 Wolverines ( 27- 7), who were also the last team to beat Michigan State ( 29- 4), which they did Jan. 13. Robinson added 13 points off the bench and Charles Matthews had 12.

Miles Bridges had 17 points to lead Michigan State before fouling out late. Jaren Jackson Jr. added 13.

Purdue 78, Penn State 70

Carsen Edwards scored 27 points as the No. 8 Boilermake­rs ( 28- 5) advanced to the Big Ten title game, which they have won only once, in 2009. Isaac Haas added 17 points and seven rebounds.

Purdue frustrated conference scoring leader Tony Carr ( 20.2 ppg), holding him to 4- for- 18 shooting and 12 points. Shep Garner led Penn State ( 21- 12) with 33 points.

Xavier 65, DePaul 62

Trevon Bluiett scored 22 points, andtheNo. 3Musketeer­s( 27- 4, 15- 3) set a school record for regular- season wins while clinching the top seed in the Big East with the victory at Wintrust Arena. DePaul’s Eli Cain and Max Strus missed three- pointers in the closing seconds that would have tied it.

Brandon Cyrus led DePaul ( 11- 19, 4- 14) with a career- high 20 points. Cain scored 14 as the Blue Demons lost for the fifth time in six games. They’ll be seeded last in the Big East tournament.

Virginia 62, Notre Dame 57

Devon Hall scored 17 points to lead the No. 1 Cavaliers ( 28- 2, 17- 1 ACC) to their fifth consecutiv­e win.

Bonzie Colson, playing in just his second game since missing 15 with a broken foot, had 24 points and 14 rebounds for the visiting Irish ( 18- 13, 8- 10). Martinas Geben added 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Marquette 85, Creighton 81

Andrew Rowsey scored 26 points and hit three deep threes in the final 3: 21 as the Golden Eagles ( 18- 12, 9- 9 Big East) ended their 30- year run at the Bradley Center with a lights- out performanc­e ( 14for- 25) from the three- point line.

Markus Howard scored 25 points for Marquette, which finished 387- 115 all- time at the Bradley Center, which opened in 1998.

Marcus Foster scored 29 points and Khyri Thomas 24 for the Bluejays ( 21- 10, 10- 8).

Oklahoma State 82, Kansas 64

Kendall Smith had a careerhigh 25 points and Mitchell Solomon 16 points and seven rebounds to lead the host Cowboys ( 18- 13, 8- 10 Big 12) past the No. 6 Jayhawks ( 24- 7, 13- 5).

Oklahoma State swept the season series, marking the first time that Kansas has been swept in a home- and- home since 2003- 04, a span of 103 series. Kansas still has 13 conference victories for the 13th consecutiv­e season.
