Raiders partways with troubled Smith
The Raiders released pass rusher Aldon Smith on Monday after his latest run- in with the law.
The Raiders retained Smith’s rights while he spent the last two seasons on the NFL’s suspended list for repeatedly violating its substanceabuse policy, but they finally decided to cut ties with him a day after San Francisco police said they were looking for him in connection with a domestic- violence allegation.
Police said an arrest warrant has been obtained for Smith stemming from allegations that he assaulted a woman Saturday. Smith left before police arrived to respond to the 911 call, and authorities are working with Smith’s attorney to arrange a time for him to surrender.
Four- timeProBowl cornerback Antonio Cromartie announced his retirement after 11 seasons. He posted a message on Instagram that said: ‘‘ After 27 years of playing football, today I say farewell.’’ Cromartie led the league with 10 interceptions in 2007.
The Cowboys put the franchise tag on Pro Bowl defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, guaranteeing him $ 17.1 million — the average of the NFL’s five highest- paid players at the position— in 2018. Lawrence had 14 ½ sacks last season.
NHL Wild lose center for season
