Penny tapped to be coach at Memphis

-

Former Memphis All- American guard Penny Hardaway is heading back to his alma mater as its men’s basketball coach.

Multiple outlets reported Memphis will introduce Hardaway as its next coach at a news conference Tuesday, but the school neither confirmed nor denied the reports. Hardaway, 46, will replace Tubby Smith, who was fired despite compiling a 40- 26 record in two seasons with the Tigers.

Hardaway is a four- time NBA All- Star and three- time All- NBA player who will be making his college coaching debut. He has been coaching for years with his own AAU program, Team Penny, and won his third consecutive Tennessee high school championship last weekend with Memphis East.

Haas update

It appears Purdue center Isaac Haas is done for the season, even if the Boilermakers’ medical team can create an elbow brace that would allow him to play in the NCAA Tournament.

Even if the NCAA approves a protective device for Haas’ right elbow, which was fractured in a first- round game Friday against Cal State Fullerton, coach Matt Painter said that there still would be limitations and that it wouldn’t be beneficial for Haas’ health.

Purdue will face Texas Tech in the Sweet 16 of the East Regional on Friday in Boston.

Charlotte hires Virginia aide

Charlotte hired Virginia associate coach Ron Sanchez to be its next coach and will introduce him at a news conference next week. The 49ers fired coach Mark Price in the middle of the season and didn’t retain interim coach Houston Fancher.
