Two straight for Gonzo
Miguel Gonzalez finished his spring with a second consecutive solid start, pitching 5„ innings of one- run ball and using an effective splitter to get five strikeouts. He allowed two walks and four hits. “My split- finger fastball, I was throwing it wherever I wanted to,’’ he said.
Gonzalez, who is expected to start the Sox’ fourth game of the season against the Blue Jays, went to the bullpen to throw 10 more pitches after he was pulled.
Sox power
Yoan Moncada hit a long home run — his third — to right against Taijuan Walker. Tim Anderson (. 304) doubled, tripled and singled, DH Matt Skole doubled in a run and Avisail Garcia (. 392) went 2- for- 4.
Cooper bullish on Rodon
Carlos Rodon threw off a mound for the third time, and pitching coach Don Cooper likes what he sees of the left- hander who’s coming back from arthroscopic shoulder surgery.
Rodon, who likely won’t return to the Sox till June at the earliest, looks looser playing catch than he has in two years, Cooper said.
“I knew he wasn’t going to be ready [ opening day], but I didn’t expect him to look as good as he does,’’ Cooper said. “It’s very, very promising, very encouraging.’’
Rodon threw 25 pitches, all fastballs and changeups.
“Everything is how I’m feeling after every mound session, and right now it feels great,’’ Rodon said.
Engel scratched
Center fielder Adam Engel was scratched a second consecutive day with a stiff neck. Jose Abreu sat out a second straight start with a tight left hamstring.
