Tigers’ Bosio dealing with health issue

-

Tigers pitching coach Chris Bosio will be away from the team for a couple of weeks because of an undisclosed health issue.

Manager Ron Gardenhire said Bosio, who served in the same capacity with the Cubs in 2012- 17, wanted to remain with the Tigers after having tests this week, but doctors recommended that he rest for the time being.

Bosio, 55, was in the Tigers’ dugout Monday but wasn’t feeling well, which led to him having tests Tuesday. Gardenhire said Bosio and wife Heather drove from Cleveland to their home in Detroit on Wednesday.

Gardenhire said Bosio will watch video and go over reports on the Tigers’ pitchers while he’s out. Bullpen coach Rick Anderson is filling in for Bosio as pitching coach.

More on the Tigers

The Tigers said right- hander Jordan Zimmermann is expected to make his next start after being hit on the jaw by a line drive Wednesday against the Indians.

Zimmermann said that the swelling in his jaw had gone down, that he didn’t have a headache and that he planned on beginning his usual routine between starts. His next scheduled start would be Tuesday against the Orioles.

Zimmermann suffered the injury when he was struck by a line drive hit by Jason Kipnis in the first inning. He was down for several minutes before walking off the field and was taken for X- rays, which were negative.

Yanks- Red Sox suspensions

Red Sox reliever Joe Kelly ( six games) and Yankees infielder Tyler Austin ( five games) were suspended for their roles in the seventh- inning brawl Wednesday between the American League East rivals at Fenway Park. Both appealed their punishments, and they are eligible to play while their appeals are considered.

In the game, Rick Porcello nohit the Yankees for six innings and allowed two hits in seven innings overall in the Red Sox’ 6- 3 victory. Red Sox first baseman Hanley Ramirez left the game with a bruised left wrist after being hit by a pitch in the first. X- rays were negative, and there were no further incidents.

Cards whip floundering Reds

The Reds fell to 2- 10 — their worst 12- game record since 1955 — with a 13- 4 loss to the Cardinals, who hit a season- high four home runs and got six RBI from Jose Martinez. The Reds helped the Cardinals’ cause with 11 walks, three with the bases full.

No stopping Ohtani

Two- way Japanese star Shohei Ohtani continued his impressive start at the plate with a three- run triple in a five- run seventh inning that fueled the Angels past the Royals 7- 1. Ohtani has 11 RBI in 26 at- bats.
