Dodgers lose SS Seager for the season

-

Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a sprained right ulnar collateral ligament and will miss the rest of the season.

Seager, a two- time All- Star and the rookie of the year in 2016, was hitting .267 with two home runs and 13 RBI.

“I had a few bad throws over the weekend and went and got an MRI this morning and it was necessary to have surgery,” said Seager, who had been bothered by a sore elbow since the middle of last season but had tried to get by with rest and rehab.

The new MRI exam showed the injury had gotten “much, much worse,” and the decision to have surgery was “cut and dried,’’ Seager said.

Manager Dave Roberts said Chris Taylor would move in from the outfield to become the every- day shortstop.

Historic finish for Hader

In a major- league first, reliever Josh Hader earned an eight- out save— with all the outs coming on strikeouts — to close out the Brewers’ 6- 5 victory over the host Reds. Hader, who earned his fourth save, has 39 strikeouts in 18 innings this season.

It was baseball’s first save with at least eight strikeouts since the Mariners’ Randy Johnson in 1996 against the Royals.

Ron Davis of the Yankees earned a three- inning save ( eight strikeouts) against the Angels in 1981.

A dud for Arrieta

Jake Arrieta ( 3- 1) lasted only 3‰ innings in the Phillies’ 8- 4 loss to the host Marlins. He allowed six earned runs after giving up three or fewer in each of his last 18 starts, dating back to July 2, 2017. The crowd of 5,415 was the smallest in the seven- season history of Marlins Park.

Red Sox slam the door

Xander Bogaerts hit a grand slam in the Red Sox’ 10- 6 victory against the visiting Royals, giving Boston six grand slams in April. That tied the 1996 Expos for the most ever in the majors by May 1. The Red Sox had zero grand slams in all of 2017.

Boston posted a team- record 19th victory in April. They had reached 18 three times, the last coming in 2013.

Big night for Pollock

Diamondbacks center fielder A. J. Pollock hit three solo home runs in the Diamondbacks’ 8- 5 win over the visiting Dodgers.
