5 seriously wounded in Homan Square shooting

Five people were seriously wounded Wednesday night in a Homan Square neighborho­od shooting on the West Side.

The shooting happened before 10 p. m. in the 3500 block of West Grenshaw, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Paramedics took three people to Stroger Hospital and two to Mount Sinai Hospital. All were in serious- to- critical condition. Nader Issa

Chicago State president search down to 3 finalists

Chicago State University has narrowed its search for a new president to three finalists.

University officials said the finalists are Zaldwaynak­a Scott, a former federal prosecutor; Patricia Ramsey, provost at Lincoln University in Pennsylvan­ia; and Heidi Anderson, special assistant to the president at Texas A& M in Kingsville. They were chosen from among about 50 applicants. The final choice would be the fifth president or interim president since December 2015.

Board of trustees vice chairman Nicholas Gowen said the goal is for the new president to start July 1. Interim President Rachel Lindsey, who took over in April 2017, had her one- year contract extended until June 30.

In addition to uncertain leadership, the 151- year- old university is battling fiscal issues and enrollment that’s declined from 7,362 students in 2010 to 3,101 last fall. AP

62- year- old woman shot after walking off bus in West Woodlawn

A 62- year- old woman was wounded Wednesday evening in a West Woodlawn neighborho­od shooting on the South Side.

She was walking after getting off a bus about 5: 30 p. m. when she heard shots in the 6600 block of South Rhodes and started running, Chicago Police said.

When she got home, she realized she had been shot in the knee, police said.

Paramedics took her to a hospital, where she was in good condition. Nader Issa

Man shot through apartment wall while laying in bed in West Town

A man was wounded in a Wednesday evening shooting while he was laying in his bed in the West Town neighborho­od.

The 41- year- old was in bed about 5: 30 p. m. when a bullet came through the wall from the apartment next door in the 2200 block of West Maypole, according to Chicago Police. Paramedics took him to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition, police said. Sun- Times Wire

Boy, 15, struck by bullet riding CTA bus

A 15- year- old boy was struck by a bullet while he was riding a CTA No. 94 South California bus Wednesday afternoon in the Chicago Lawn neighborho­od on the Southwest Side.

The boy was not believed to be the target of the shooting, which happened about 1: 10 p. m. while the bus was traveling south in the 6200 block of South California, authoritie­s said. The bullet came through a window of the bus and struck the boy in the head, Chicago Police said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition, but his condition was later upgraded to good. Matthew Hendrickso­n

Bus driver charged with DUI after crash

A suburban bus driver was charged with DUI after a crash with another bus Wednesday at a Crystal Lake middle school.

Wayne Desparte, 75, was charged with a felony count of aggravated driving under the influence and a misdemeano­r count of child endangerme­nt, according to Crystal Lake police.

About 7: 40 a. m., officers were sent to HannahBear­dsly Middle School after Desparte crashed the bus he was operating into a second bus, police said. Students on Desparte’s bus were not hurt, police said. A second minor crash was later reported in which Desparte struck a Jeep Renegade while he was headed to the school earlier in the morning. Desparte, of Lake in the Hills, was determined to be under the influence of prescripti­on drugs, police said. Sun- Times Wire

Juveniles suspected of DePauw slurs

GREENCASTL­E, Ind. — DePauw University said juveniles are suspected of leaving a racial slur recently found at a park on the western Indiana campus. That slur was one of several racist messages discovered around the school. Those incidents prompted protesters to interrupt a campus event last month with actress Jenna Fischer.
