2nd- half struggles douse Fire

Alberth Elis scored two second- half goals to lead the Houston Dynamo past the Fire 3- 2 on Sunday at Toyota Park in Bridgeview.

Elis, on a one- on- one break, cut back to evade defender Johan Kappelhof and ripped a right- footer from the center of the box to break a 2- 2 tie in the 74th minute.

After the Dynamo’s Romell Quioto opened the scoring in the fourth minute, Fire forward Nemanja Nikolic scored in the 14th minute to make it 1- 1 and then fed Diego Campos for a goal about two minutes later to give the Fire a 2- 1 lead.

Elis tied it on a penalty kick in the 56th minute after Fire goalie Richard Sanchez was whistled for a foul in the penalty area.

‘‘ There are no excuses,’’ Fire coach Veljko Paunovic said. ‘‘ Obviously, we are who we are. All the guys want to win and are giving their best. This is the best we can do right now.’’

The Fire ( 3- 6- 2) have lost three of their last four, while the Dynamo ( 4- 3- 3) earned their first road victory.

U. S. takes bronze medal at worlds

Chris Kreider scored two goals to lead the U. S. to a 4- 1 victory against Canada in the bronze- medal game of the world hockey championsh­ips in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Patrick Kane had an assist to finish the tournament with 20 points ( eight goals, 12 assists), the first player to do so since 2008. He was the first American to be named the tournament MVP.

“Obviously, I’m here to produce and try to create offense and make plays out there,” Kane said. “Overall, I’m happy. It was a fun tournament and a great experience for me, and I hope it will help me with my career going forward.”

Alex DeBrincat finished the 10- game event with nine points ( one goal, eight assists).

Filip Forsberg and Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored in the shootout to give Sweden a 3- 2 victory over Switzerlan­d for the gold medal. It’s Sweden’s third world title in six years and 11th overall.

Carpenter wins pole for Indy

Ed Carpenter’s four- lap average of 229.618 mph topped Simon Pagenaud ( 228.761) and Will Power ( 228.607) to earn him the pole, his third, for the Indianapol­is 500 next Sunday.

Danica Patrick ( 228.090) qualified seventh for the final start of her career. It’s the fourth time Patrick has qualified in the top nine, finishing fourth, eighth and 22nd the previous three times.

Luka Doncic scored 15 points to lead Real Madrid to the Euroleague title with a 85- 80 victory against Turkish team Fenerbahce in Belgrade, Serbia. Doncic is considered to be a top- five pick if he declares for the NBA Draft. He said he will announce his decision soon.

Rookie Aaron Wise shot a 6- under 65 to cruise to a three- stroke victory over Marc Leishman at the Byron Nelson in Dallas. Wise’s 23- under 261 is a tournament record.

Rafael Nadal beat defending champ Alexander Zverev 6- 1, 1- 6, 6- 3 to win the Italian Open in Rome. The victory means Nadal will reclaim the No. 1 ranking from Roger Federer, who’s sitting out the clay season to prepare for Wimbledon.

Minnesota added graduate transfer Brock Stull, a 6- 4 guard from Rockford who averaged 13.4 points last season for Milwaukee.
