Pope warns of ‘ hemorrhagi­ng’ of priests, nuns in Europe

VATICAN CITY— Pope Francis voiced alarmMonda­y at the “hemorrhagi­ng” of nuns and priests in Italy and Europe, saying God only knows how many seminaries, monasterie­s, convents and churches will close because fewer people are being called to lives of religious service. Francis told Italy’s bishops that Italy and Europe were entering a period of “vocational sterility” to which he wasn’t sure a solution exists.

Lou Holtz settles defamation lawsuit with Daily Beast

Attorneys for Lou Holtz said the former Notre Dame coach and the news website The Daily Beast have settled a defamation lawsuit filed by the college football Hall of Famer. Terms were confidenti­al, but The Daily Beast apologized for and corrected the headline that ran July 19, 2016, with a story on Holtz’s remarks at a luncheon the Republican National Coalition for Life. The headline read: “Lou Holtz at RNC says Immigrants are Deadbeats Invading the U. S.” In its apology, The Daily Beast admitted that Holtz did not say immigrants are deadbeats. The Daily Beast said it stands by the rest of its story.

Tesla’s Model 3 doesn’t get Consumer Reports’ recommende­d buy

DETROIT— Long emergency stopping distances, difficult- to- use controls and a harsh ride stopped Tesla’s Model 3 electric car from getting a recommende­d buy rating from Consumer Reports. While the magazine said the car has exhilarati­ng accelerati­on and handling, testers were troubled by its 152- foot average stopping distance from 60 miles per hour in emergency braking tests. The magazine said the distance was worse than any modern car it has tested.
