Brewers top Cards for 4th win in row

Jonathan Villar and Christian Yelich homered, pitcher Brent Suter helped his own cause with a two- run double and the Brewers won their fourth consecutiv­e game with an 8- 3 victory Monday against the visiting Cardinals.

Suter ( 5- 3) allowed three runs in five innings, but his two- run double in the fourth staked the Brewers to a 4- 0 lead. Since being shut out Thursday by the Mets, the Brewers have scored 37 runs during their winning streak.

Ryan Braun had three hits for the Brewers after manager Craig Counsell dropped him from his customary third spot in the lineup to fifth. It was the first time Braun batted lower than fourth since Sept. 23, 2014.

Justin Verlander ( 7- 2) yielded one run and five hits in 6‰ innings,

J. D. Davis hit a three- run home run and the Astros rebounded from blowing a five- run lead in the ninth inning Sunday against the Indians to defeat the host Yankees 5- 1.

Verlander has allowed 10 earned runs in 12 starts this season and leads the majors with a 1.11 ERA.

Pinch hitter Charlie Culberson hit a two- run homer against Seth

Lugo ( 1- 1) with one out in the ninth inning to boost the Braves past the visiting Mets 4- 3 in the first game of a doublehead­er. Devin Mesoraco had given the Mets a 3- 2 lead with a solo homer in the top of the inning. The Braves put left fielder Ronald Acuna Jr. on the 10- day disabled list with a mild sprain of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee suffered when he tripped over first base while running out a grounder Sunday against the Red Sox.

Tigers outfielder Niko Goodrum left the team’s 9- 3 victory against the visiting Angels because of heat exhaustion in the fourth inning. There was no immediate word about his condition.

The Giants purchased the contract of 25- year- old right- hander Dereck Rodriguez — the son of Hall

Celts’ Irving had nasal surgery

Celtics general manager Danny Ainge said point guard Kyrie Irving was unable to attend Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals Sunday against the Cavaliers because he was recovering from nasal surgery.

Ainge said Irving had a deviated septum. The injury occurred when he accidental­ly was hit in the face by teammate Aron Baynes in November. Irving wore a mask while healing from the facial fracture.

Rain suspends Nadal opener

Top- seeded Rafael Nadal began his quest for his 11th French Open title by winning the first two sets against Simone Bolelli 6- 4, 6- 3 before rain forced the first- round match to be suspended with Bolelli leading 3- 0 in the third in Paris.

Among the first- round winners were seventh- seeded Dominic

Thiem, 12th- seeded Sam Querrey and 20th- seeded Novak Djokovic on the men’s side and second- seeded

Caroline Wozniacki and eighth- seeded Petra Kvitova on the women’s.

Elway fails to make Senior Open

Broncos executive John Elway, 57, failed to earn one of two spots in his qualifier available to the U. S. Senior Open next month in Colorado Springs, Colorado, after shooting a 10- over- par 80 that left him in a tie for 18th.
