Matthews needs surgery

Packers linebacker Clay Matthews says he needs surgery on his nose after getting hit in the face with a line drive during a charity softball game Saturday in Grand Chute, Wisconsin.

Matthews was pitching when offensive lineman Lucas Patrick hit the ball directly into his face, knocking him to the ground. The Green Bay ( Wisconsin) Press Gazette reported Matthews got up, covered his face with his glove, then walked to the dugout. He didn’t return to the game.

Matthews later tweeted that he suffered a broken nose and that he would have surgery after the swelling subsides. He thanked fans for their well- wishes and expressed thanks that the injury wasn’t more serious.

Americans Stephens, Keys in quarters

Tenth- seeded Sloane Stephens, the reigning U. S. Open champion, rolled into the women’s quarterfin­als at the French Open with a 6- 2, 6- 0 rout of Anett Kontaveit.

Thirteenth- seeded Madison Keys, whom Stephens beat for theU. S. Open title last year, and unseeded YuliaPutin­tseva also reached thewomen’s quarters. Stephens andKeys are two of the three U. S. women left in the draw, along with unseeded SerenaWill­iams.

Second- seeded Alexander Zverev, seventhsee­ded Dominic Thiem, 20th- seeded Novak Djokovic and unseeded Marco Cecchinato advanced to the men’s quarterfin­als.

DeChambeau wins Memorial in playoff

Bryson DeChambeau sank a 12- foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to win the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio. DeChambeau closed with a 1- under- par 71 to finish 72 holes of regulation in a three- way tie with Byeong

Hun An ( 3- under 69) and Kyle Stanley ( 2- under 70) at 15- under 273.

Phil Mickelson shot a 4- under 68 to tie for 13th at 10 under, and Tiger Woods shot an even- par 72 to tie for 23rd at 9 under.

† Ariya Jutanugarn bogeyed the last two holes of regulation to fall into a playoff, then prevailed over Hyo- Joo Kim with a par on the fourth extra hole to win the U. S. Women’s Open in Birmingham, Alabama. Both completed 72 holes at 11- under 277.

Truex captures NASCAR race at Pocono

Martin Truex Jr. pulled away off a restart with seven laps left to win the NASCAR Cup race at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvan­ia. Truex, who had finished second in the last two races, beat Kyle Larson to the finish line by 2.5 seconds for his second victory of the season.

† Ryan Hunter- Reay earned his first IndyCar Series victory since 2015, prevailing at Belle Isle in Detroit after leader Alexander Rossi slid off the track with about seven laps to go. Hunter- Reay finished more than 11 seconds ahead of runner- up Will Power.

DeShields fuels Sky to victory

Diamond DeShields scored 25 points and Cheyenne Parker 20, and the Sky ( 3- 3) outscored the Aces 32- 10 from the free- throw line en route to a 95- 90 victory in WNBA action atWintrust Arena.
