Giants’ Longoria has broken hand, out indefinite­ly

Giants third baseman Evan Longoria suffered a broken left hand after being hit by a pitch from Marlins right- hander Dan Straily in the fourth inning Thursday in Miami. There is no timetable for his return, and the Giants said they will decide in the next few days whether he will need surgery.

Longoria, 32, is hitting .246 with 10 home runs and 34 RBI. He was a three- time All- Star during 10 seasons with the Rays before being traded to the Giants last winter.

In the game, Pablo Sandoval had a two- run single in the 16th inning to lift the Giants to a 6- 3 victory. The Giants salvaged the finale of the four- game series after dropping the first three.

Verlander pitches Astros to eighth win in row

Justin Verlander ( 9- 2) pitched seven solid innings, Brian McCann homered for the first time in nearly a month and the visiting Astros extended their winning streak to eight games with a 7- 3 victory against the Athletics that gave them a three- game sweep.

The winning streak is the Astros’ longest since they won 11 in a row from May 25 to June 5 last season on their way to their first World Series title. They also improved to 8- 1 this season against the A’s.

The Astros’ Evan Gattis, who set a franchise record with five RBI in each of the first two games of the series, went 1- for- 5.

Velasquez flirts with no- no in Phillies’ victory

Vince Velasquez ( 5- 7) retired 20 of the first 21 batters he faced and a took a no- hitter two outs into the seventh inning, Rhys Hoskins and Nick Williams homered and the host Phillies walloped the Rockies 9- 3.

Trevor Story lined Velasquez’s 105th and final pitch to left for an RBI double. Velasquez, who allowed two runs and one hit in 6‰ innings, got a standing ovation as he walked off the mound.

Rookie Torres’ three- run HR fuels Yankees

Rookie Gleyber Torres hit a three- run homer to highlight a four- run fifth inning that carried the Yankees past the visiting Rays 4- 3. Torres’ blast enabled Domingo German ( 1- 4), who allowed three runs and struck out 10 in six innings, to earn his first major- league victory.

Son replaces Lerner, 92, as Nats’ principal owner

Mark Lerner, 64, replaced 92- year- old father Ted Lerner as managing principal owner of the Nationals. Major League Baseball approved the move at its quarterly meeting in New York.
