Kershaw lasts three in return

Clayton Kershaw was shaky in an abbreviate­d return to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night.

Kershaw came off the disabled list and allowed two runs in three innings against the host New York Mets. He threw 55 pitches, starting out strong before laboring through his final inning. Matt

Kemp hit a pinch- hit grand slam as the Dodgers won 8- 3.

“Good to be back,” Kershaw said. “Now I can focus on getting better.”

The lefty ace was scheduled to make a rehab start with Class AAA Oklahoma City at Omaha, but the Dodgers decided Friday to have him pitch in New York because of precarious weather in Nebraska. Trevor Bauer struck out 11 over 6„ innings to beat the Detroit Tigers for the fourth time this season, leading the Cleveland Indians past the visitors 4- 1 for their sixth consecutiv­e victory overall. Meanwhile, Indians left- hander Andrew Miller won’t throw off a mound for 10 days and the team says there’s no timetable for when its ace reliever will return while he continues to deal with a sore right knee.

GOLF Four- shot lead for Casey

Paul Casey shot an 8- under 62 to take a four- stroke lead into the final round of the Travelers Championsh­ip in Cromwell, Connecticu­t. Casey called the bogey- free round at TPC River Highlands his best of the year.

MISCELLANE­OUS Fire, Sounders battle to tie

The Fire ( 5- 7- 5) got a goal in the ninth minute by Aleksander Katai, but Clint Dempsey answered for the host Seattle Sounders ( 38- 3) midway through the first half in a 1- 1 tie. Dempsey’s first goal of the season matched the Sounders’ regular- season career goals record of 47.

After five years back home in Russia, Ilya Kovalchuk, 35, is ready to resume his Stanley Cup chase with the Los Angeles Kings. The high- scoring forward agreed to a three- year, $ 18.75 million deal, choosing the Kings over several interested teams for his return to the NHL.

Defending champion Roger Federer will play 21- year- old Borna Coric in the Gerry Weber Open final in Halle, Germany, as he chases his 99th career singles title on Sunday. Federer reached his 12th final in Halle after beating qualifier Denis Kudla 7- 6 ( 1), 7- 5.

Novak Djokovic advanced to his first ATP Tour final in almost a year by defeating Jeremy Chardy at Queen’s Club in London. Djokovic will face top seed Marin Cilic in Sunday’s final.
